System breaks

I have a trumpet part which has at one moment 8 bars in a system:

I select the barline that is orange now, and press "create system break, so there will be two systems of 4 bars. This doesn’t happen, instead this happens:

Why is that?

and a question that has to do with is, except the following always happens: when I select a couple of bars to make them into one system, e.g,:

Instead of making them into one system dorico always forgets the multirests:

What am I doing wrong?

I have to manually put in a system break after the multirest and then manually delete the system break dorico made where I didn’t select and don’t want it. This always happens, What is the right procedure to make bars into one system?

There are too many System Breaks.

Delete all of them, let Dorico do the hard work.
Then insert custom System Breaks only if necessary.

There are other note spacing options for example the “Default Space” constant.

this is what I want, and what I ask dorico to do: “make into one system”, why does dorico refuse te include multerests, unless I take the steps I describe?

No, this is not the case. Dorico makes these! In this case it looks like there are a lot of system breaks and I put them there, but I haven’t. I let do Dorico do the hard work, but this is the way it happens. Always! Somehow Dorico makes systems of two bars, without me wanting and ordering it, ans everytime Dorico “forgets” to include the multirest.

now even this happens:

I want these bars in one system:

and this happens:

How to get these in one syetem?

If I delete the system breaks manually the whole page is a mess and I have to do everything manually

Dorico doesn’t create System Breaks unless this is a XML import or a propagated part .

I’m very sorry to disappoint you, but that is simply not true. In that case I own a faulty version, because I really didn’t put those frame breaks there. I just have “4 bars in a system” selected, and that is what I want! And Dorico does that by putting all the system breaks thare

Oh I’m sorry, yes it is a propragated part, but I want it to be!

If that is the problem I’ll never be able to use propagate anymore. Is there a way to propagate and then make it into a normal page?

And what I described about the multirest never included in a “make into system” is always the case, also on non-propagated parts.

Uncheck “Include system formatting”

So, yes you are right, there are a lot of system breaks, but they are not the problem. This also happens (both of the problems above) on parts without this system breaks all over the place,.

But that’s the whole idea. I want to propagate the system formatting. But again: that is not the problem. This strange behavior is also happening on non propagated parts.

I guess I’ll have to live with it? Dorico still beats pencil and paper. But it’s too bad because it involves a lot of work… Maybe something to be fixed with the next update! I hope!

But Dorico does create system breaks! A lot! I will look if I can reproduce that tomorrow if I have the time. A lot of times, not only when multirests are involved, Dorico does strange things when you work with “create system break” and “make into system”. I will take pictures when it happens the next time.

Not really, if you know which adjustments to make, sorry.

In this case YOU create the system breaks.

I did not. I hate to make this into a “you did - I did not” discussion but I did not create these system breaks. And I do not exclude multirests from “make into systems.” And I do not order Dorico to make 2-bar systems all of a sudden. That is really Dorico, not me. I’m very sorry.

What happens if you remove all system breaks in that layout and set this in the Layout options?

When multi bar rests are involved, the number of bars might be different.

“Propagate” created the system breaks. And I have to create and delete system breaks AFTER I order Dorico to put 4 bars at a part, but Dorico makes strange decisions sometimes. Sorry my english is very bad and I’m tired. I hope that when this happens the next time, I will be able to record what happens. Ok, I will remove all the sytem breaks, but that is a lot of work to do for 13 parts, and I just propagated them for a very good reason. But I’ll try!
