System Lockup When Creating Send Routing in Complex Project (Cubase 14/Mac Studio M2/UA Apollo)

Hi all,

I’m experiencing complete Cubase freezes when creating new sends or activating sidechain connections in complex projects, and I’m hoping someone has encountered the same issue.

My setup:

  • Cubase 14 Pro on Mac Studio M2 Max 64GB
  • 4 x UAD Apollo units daisy-chained via Thunderbolt (8p, 2x x16, Twin)
  • UAD v11.7.1, buffer size 2048 samples

The project uses an advanced 3D mixing template (Nathan Nyquist-inspired) with multiple drum subgroups, multiple instrument subgroups, seven FX send channels (reverbs/delays), parallel submix busses, and SoundID Reference in Control Room.

The problem: When I create a new send or activate an external sidechain on Frequency 2 — even with transport stopped — Cubase locks up completely and has to be force-quit. It doesn’t happen in simpler projects, which suggests the processing graph reconstruction is too heavy for this routing complexity combined with four Apollo units.

I’ve tried: maximum buffer size, ASIO-Guard on High, dedicated sidechain FX channels, full UAD driver reinstall. Nothing helps.

Has anyone with a similar setup found a working solution? And is this a known issue with Cubase + multiple Apollo units on Apple Silicon?

Thanks
