Tab features / options that are similar to Finale

I use Dorico mainly for guitar teaching. I also am a Finale user before Dorico.

I am somewhat moving away from Finale because as we all know is out of development.

Some Tab features that Finale can do that would be good if Dorico could do like…

In Finale I was able to hide Tab in individual staves and even collapse the tab to measures that only had music in the measures. When using the Staff Tool if you right click the selected measure there a popup list. Number 12 is “Force Force Hide Staff (Cutaway)”. Number 13 is “Hide Staff (and collapse)”. Also in the Staff Menu there is an option called “Hide Empty Staves”. These would great if they were in Dorico.

I have charts, mostly guitar, where there are measures of chords with slashes and then measures with notes. I could do this in Finale.

When I have to have Tab in Dorico some of the staves are just chords with slashes and that takes up room and my charts are longer when the don’t really have to be.

I know there is difference between Finale and Dorico in the the tab inputs automatically in Dorico but not in Finale.

I just want the tab to be seen when there are notes present or have those options I mentioned above.

Dorico it seems does not do this. It would be a great new tab feature.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Hi @glamastro1, and welcome to the Forum!

As a workaround (until more functionalities will be eventually be added), you could use a duplicate guitar player with Notation only (and if you put the duplicate player into a group in Setup mode, the automatic numbering will not take place), and use one or the other player for specific systems (the automatic staff hiding in Layout Options/Vertical Spacing/Staff Visibility will take care of what is shown, or you could use manual staff visibility for a more granular control).

If you could show an example of what you would like to have as result, we can give further advice.

Thanks Christian.

Here is an example of tab on one staff only

Here is one measure of tab showing the rest is collapsed and the tab is also on one staff only

I don’t have to use 2 guitar parts (players) only one. Hopefully Dorico will be able to do this in the future.

Here is a screenshot of the Staff Tool options in Finale… number 12 and 13 are what I am using to achieve the results of the screenshots previously posted.
