Tape saturation channel strip auto gain

can someone explain what the “auto gain” does in the tape saturation channel strip…

If you add saturation, it will add level, the auto gain will compensate on that.

hi st
thanks for your reply
that was my understanding as well, but I had someone comment that on that effect the auto gain is actually affecting the saturation amount not the output gain, to me that would be more like an auto threshold (if there could be such a thing) on a compressor vs the usual make up gain control, what do you think about the gain being a saturation level control?

no guessing needed…

sorry for the German help pages…

thanks st
so in looking at this documentation
Auto Gain
Adjusts the gain automatically.
Output
Sets the output gain.

would you say that clearly says the auto gain affects the output level and not the saturation level?

Drive

Controls the amount of tape saturation.

Why would they make two knobs for the same functionality?

You either use the AutoGain feature or you use the output knob.

“Gain” implies adding level.
“Drive” implies “saturation” amount.

Saturation can involve a gain in signal level, but it isn’t the same as “‘just’ gain”, i.e. only adding level to a signal. AutoGain is about only adding (or arguably lowering) level to compensate for the processing that happens before.

So ‘yes’, to me it’s ‘clear’.
