Tempo mark above both piano parts in a duet

Hi, it is something already discussed here, but can’t get on with, so I need to ask it again, sorry.

I’m transcribing a piano duet and wanted to ad at some points tempo marks to both players, It appears only on top of the whole score though. I’ve checked ‘system objects’ in Layout options but couldn’t find the suitable word to click.

Could you tell me what to do please?

Wait until it’s implemented? (being able to put system text wherever we need is a long standing feature request the Team knows about)
Or use two custom Paragraph styles that match the immediate and gradual Tempo font styles, and copy that as staff text (shift-X) on the second piano — that’s the fastest route!

In this particular case I think you can use a workaround. It might not be very elegant but it can be effective:

  • Instead of two piano’s, assign your second player a Pianoforte.
  • In Libraries > Instrument families:
    • First, create a new instrument family. Name it whatever you want. Assign the Pianoforte to the new instrument family.
    • Second, remove the Pianoforte from the Keyboards family.
  • In Layout option > Staves and Systems > System objects, select your new instrument family.
  • In Setup mode, rename the Pianoforte to Piano. Dorico will then automatically assign the player numbers and you’ll have system objects visible for both players.

Wow! This is clever! I’ll try it. Quite relieved that it is so complicated as I spent yesterday an hour to figure out without result. Thank you so much.

Ok, that is the fastest route. But I don’t like messing with the instruments definitions and families, I don’t know how to go back (only for that instrument) if needed — and I will probably forget I’ve made such changes in two weeks…

As long as you don’t save them as defaults with the star button (or with the checkbox when choosing Edit names directly), those changes will only apply to that particular project.

Yes, that’s right

Yesterday I did what you suggested, @MarcLarcher , using text items, so actually this hasn’t caused an issue, no playback needed, but still was/am curious how to manage it doricoish:)
