I would like to be able to simply type in a tempo, with out a name (i.e. Allegretto), since it is not very common in Pop Music.
Is there a possibility?

Yes, type e.g. q=120 into the Shift+T tempo popover, where q = quarter note, e = eighth note, h = half note, and so on. If you need e.g. a dotted quarter note, you can type q.=120.
