The instant before I click send in a bug report

Everyone knows that the only way to find a lost item is to purchase a replacement, insuring you will find the lost one within days or even minutes.

In the same manner, when I am certain I’ve encountered a bug, the process of describing, in detail the context in my bug report, invariably the solution suddenly pops into my head just before clicking send.

  • the corollary to this is when I do actually send the report, the first reply shows that I’ve missed something embarrassingly obvious.
  • the ancillary is that it is indeed a bug, of which everyone else is well aware and it has already been discussed ad nauseam.

Programmers know that the best way to solve a hard bug is to go and explain the matter to a colleague. Because you have to put it in words the answer pops into your head before you finish the explanation, very often. It’s interesting.

That’s right up there with fixing a bug and saying, “How did this ever work?!”
