Here are some issues that still force me to the Generic Remote or Mackie Control or TypeScript coding
- motorized faders problem
- visual indication, which insert slot is currently selected/active for MR manipulation
- controlling inserts of selected track by position in the inserts chain
- e.g. I have a Generic Remote setup to allow me to have 16 Bypass buttons available simultaneously - much like one has on a guitar pedal board. And yes, my longest inserts chain is for my guitar tracks with a lot of inserts from octaving, wah, tremolo, compressor, amplifiers, speaker emulation, delays, reverbs - I have single button pushes to activate/bypass any of them quickly while I’m experimenting with what might work for my current song.
- using Program Change messages (some controllers - especially foot controllers - really seem to need those)
- using the Play button as Start/Stop while also using the STOP button second press as return to previous starting point
(There are probably more, but those are at the top of my current list).
And I’ve never been able to make relative CC work with my Native Instrument controllers, but I’m not sure yet, if that’s a problem from Steinberg’s side or from Native Instruments’ side. Relative CC can be made to work ok with my Behringer BCR 2000.
It sure would be great - However I’ve not seen much indication that Steinberg has it in their DNA to do community building like some other companies have done.
But there could be other options (… a little further down in this post) .
Very much agreed! I’m also one of them. But if I make more music or fiddle with remote hardware - as long as I keep paying for Cubase upgrades, I’m also part of the Steinberg financial eco-system. And I have answered numerous questions here in the forum, so I’m, definitely also part of the current form of Steinberg “community”.
And since making music isn’t a money maker for the overwhelming majority either, the remote control hobby is of equal value/waste-of-time (depending on your viewpoint) to making music.
I’ve long been torn between either
- walking away from the "remote control hobby " or
- doubling down on it
The latter might involve attempting to start an external resource and/or community site on that topic. I have the technical background for creating, running and maintaining websites. There’s tons of relevant open source software, hosting costs aren’t too crazy for the computing power and data storage needs of such a niche community, so stitching together a community site with open source software for remote control hobbyists would seem to be well within technical reach.
A really big thing holding me back is the need for moderation for any community site. I find dealing with human asshattery (accidental and willful, mild and abusive) much more stressful than technical hurdles.
- For example, just because some of us here have said the MIDI Remote isn’t as bad as some posts here seemed to imply, being effectively called a CULT member and that post being liked by someone whom I very much respect, was quite a disheartening dagger to the heart.
And for something being an unpaid hobby, I’m not eager to expose it to such daggers.
And - maybe above all - I’m worried that Steinberg might find the creation of such an independent community site a hostile act. And that’s most certainly not something I’d want while being deeply entrenched in Steinberg’s software (and used to be hardware, too).
p.s. Sorry for the lengthy post – didn’t know how to express enough nuance in shorter form.
