Tie from dotted note not working properly

It seem to be many bugs in Dorico 5 Pro. Things may start working or working not the way you expect them to work either as you work or after leaving Doric running without using it.
Here are another bug I can’t get around: See HERE
Creating a tie from a dotted note tie removes the dot. So, how?

Some other bugs:

  1. Slurs being created over all the measure when press S:

  2. Starting Dorico gives the Error:

I have to restart Dorico all the time to fix the bugs.

Please advise.

Thank you.

Have you delved into any documentation yet? Videos? Tutorials?

Dorico changing the visual representation of notes when you tie them together is an artefact of Notation Options - it’s very much the way the software is designed. If you don’t like them, change them - the documentation will tell you how. If you want to force specific durations regardless of the Notation Options, use Force Duration.

Creating a slur from a note (outside of note input mode) will slur it to the next note. If the next note is many bars away, that’s on you. If want you want is a short laissez vibrer tie, add one using the relevant property in the properties panel.

If you’re closing and reopening Dorico quickly, you may not be waiting long enough for the VST Audio Engine (which runs as a separate process) to close, which will mean that on attempting to reopen Dorico it won’t be able to launch that process.

However, quitting and restarting Dorico, regardless of rapidity, is not going to “make bugs go away” if, in fact, they’re not bugs.

Do feel free to ask questions and people will give useful help. Please don’t assume that if something in Dorico doesn’t work the way you expect it to, it’s because something’s broken or buggy. Dorico’s different to other notation programs you may have previously used, and with very good reasons, and it will remain so.

Hi Egor,

why do you call this behaviour as bugs?
1.) a tied note will be displayed depending on your notation options.
2.) where would you expect the slur to connect to, if you have only selected one note before pressing S? It looks, as if Dorico finds a next note in the same voice far in advance and smartly connects to it.
3.) you can read up on audio engine in a lot of threads. :thread:

ps. this is a civilised forum, every question will be read, there is no need for catchy titles. Rest assured, we are not out in the wild internet here

Thanks! So, how do I tie the two notes in my video example. The only way I finally managed to do it is to remove the dote from the half note and have the quater note rest on beat 3 after that and then tie it to the 8th note on beat 4.

not understand.

not understand either.

I think, what you are looking for is “force duration”. Select your note, then press O 6 7 7, in a rapid sequence; That’s an “O” first (not a zero) then the number “6” and twice the number “7”.

Where would you expect the slur to connect if you have only selected one note before pressing S?

According to the manual, you can also press S, and then when you create the next note, the slur will be automatically created.

That’ll work during note input, yes. The slur won’t appear until you’ve added the next note.

yes, and this is exactly what happened
except that you had already have a next note further on…

tie the tow notes
Sorry, a typo: TWO notes
the quarter note rest on beta 3.
Sorry, another typo: on BEAT 3

cheers :beers: :grinning:

Thank you for the reply!
0677 gives me a dotted half note but if I try to tie it to the next note it breaks it again same way as in the screencast I provided

Hi Egoruk,

Have a look at the first steps documentation if you haven’t already. It will give you a good introduction to everything Dorico.

ah, ok: select your dotted half note, then press letter “O” to lock duration of that note, then place the tie…

As I mentioned in my initial post, I can’t find any information on ties in the documentation aside from using “T” to create them. I don’t want to change the visual or any other representation of the notes; I just want to create a tie. Could you provide a link to the relevant article about ties?

Thank you!

Ok, this works! Thank you so much!

This is where you should start, with the online help:

https://www.steinberg.help/r/dorico-pro/5.1/en

If you put ‘input ties’ into the search box, you should see the relevant documentation on that, and from there you can also find links to other material on ties.

Good luck!

The information presented here goes far beyond just creating ties: Inputting Ties

Read the various boxed Notes and Tips, which mention the Note Grouping rules and Force Duration, and scroll down to the carefully curated Related Links that take you to the relevant documentation on those topics.
