Time for a laptop

Hey Cuboidz
I’ve built my last two or three DAW desktops but feel it’s time to finally go
mobile. My current machine must be about ten years old but is still pretty good for my purposes. Point being, if I get the right 2 or 3 year-old laptop I should be able to expect better performance than I have now, shouldn’t I?
Last time I looked into this was a few years ago and there was some issue - I think you couldn’t compare processor performance like for like between desktops and laptops. Sorry, I can’t remember the exact details - I think something to do with how the load was shared between cores for best power management. Is that all resolved now or are there still specific considerations for laptops? Do serious Cubasers still prefer desktops?
Current setup is Intel i5-4570 3.20GHz, Gigabyte GA-H87 motherboard.
I’m hoping that should be fairly easy to beat given its age. Thinking of having a dock for most of the peripherals in the studio and simpler setup on the go.

You’ve got good timing - this thread has some meat to it:

^ this.

Ah, brilliant, thanks. Must be something in the air.
Seems to confirm my thought that a newer laptop (does anyone even call them that any more?) /notebook should fairly easily match my old machine.

Thanks but I’ll stick with Windows for now. It’s what I know and works fine for me.
