Time signature in tablature

I can’t figure out how to make time signatures appear in the tablature staff.

Hi @billstevns ,
If you use both Notation and Tabulature (in Layout Options/Players/Fretted Instruments), it will show the TS only for the notation (1), if you use only Tabulature, the TS will appear (2):

2.

If you really want it shown in the Tab as well, you can use MusGlyphs and input it as text, and move it into place. Works fine.

(the 4/4 as text is the same size as the 4/4 time signature, though it doesn’t look like it. But you can change it easily)

Thanks Dan. I don’t see anything about MusGlyphs in the manual.

Interesting that XML imported from Finale has the time signature in tablature.

It’s a third-party font that works well for this sort of thing.

If I request here that it be added to Dorico will the designers see it, or do I need to post my request elsewhere?

Bill

You don’t need to. Just find it online, install it, and use it like any other font!

I mean if I request that TS in Tab be added – will they see the request here? I know at Finale the developers supposedly only consider requests directly to Finale.

The Musglyph trick can be a workaround in some cases but it’s limited in terms of available time signatures, I wish it could be dynamic rather than hard coded cause I’ve found myself stuck in other contexts (like in an app I’m developing and in a rhythm method I’m writing).
Do you plan on adding more time signatures @dan_kreider ?

I’m Dorico’s product manager (which means I’m the main liaison between our customers and our development team), and I read every single post here on the forum, though I can’t always reply. (Particularly these days when there are several times more posts every day than there were just a few weeks ago!)

You can rest assured that if a reasonable suggestion has been posted here, we will have taken note of it if it is new.

Thank you
I just moved to Dorico from Finale. Like the other customer, I’d love to be able to add TS to both standard notation and TABs
Thank you

I’ve recently been looking at a volume of Paul Simon songs transcribed for Guitar (Notation and TAB) by Mark Hanson who’s written a fair number of books for guitarists over the years. The reason for mentioning it here is that I very much like the style he’s adopted in this volume.

  • The time signature is on the TAB stave
  • The tunings are shown right at the start
  • The rhythms for all notated voices are summarised below the TAB stave
  • Important fingerings (start, key phrases) are shown as a part of the notation.
  • Notes picked by the thumb are differentiated from all other notes in the TAB stave.

He also shows Chord Diagrams but at the bottom of the page and even then, only those chords that occur on that page. New chords are shown on the bottom of subsequent pages. Personally, I love that approach.

Here’s an example of one stave to show you it in action.

If anyone would like to see my tortured approach to time signature in the Tab staff:

Shift X > 4 return 4 (4 over 4)
Font to Maestro (or other music font)
Size to 20
Select lower 4 > Baseline shift up 36
Move into place in Engraving mode
Save in template

Oh yikes, no need for that tomfoolery! MusGlyphs is here for you. I suggested it earlier in the thread. You really need to get it for this sort of thing!
