Hello all. Still out here learning the Dorico ropes here and running into very simple things that I can’t sort out.
Today’s issue: I cannot get the flow title to appear on my score. I’ve got another project where I did this and it worked; I copied the settings over for my new project, and no dice. I just get a blank space where the title should be. I’ve attached screen shots of the setup page (where you can see the generic flow title) and then the engrave pages. I just can’t see why it’s not populating the text frame with the flow title.
Your template reads “flowtitle”, so the title will be pulled from the current flow (probably flow #1) from project infos.
You probably have entered the title to the “project” section of the dialog, not flow #1.
Either copy this information in the project info dialog to flow #1 or edit the page template to user “projecttitle” instead of “flowtitle”.
Thanks for the very quick reply. Sadly, I think I already had it set up as you suggest, and still nothing. But maybe I’ve got it wrong? See screenshot, which I think is what you are suggesting.
So I still don’t understand what’s happening here. I changed “flowtitle” to “projectitle”, and now it puts the project title there, but that’s not what I want - I want the title of the flow. See attached screenshot. I’ve done this very thing on other projects with no problem, so I don’t know why it’s not working now.
As for the override, I cleared that, and now I’ve got the Flow and Flow # floating above the staff, which I also don’t want. And when I look at the engrave window, I don’t see where the indications are to pull that info in. See screenshot for that - shouldn’t those show up in text frames here? Is there a resource out there to explain the “override” thing, as it seems to me all it means is if you change something from Dorico’s default it messes everything up. But the default isn’t what I want to see. I’ve attached some more screenshots here.
I hope it’s clear what I’m trying to get to here: I just want the layout name (which is appearing), composer (which is appearing), and the name of the particular song (which is not appearing).
Thanks so much. There must be a very easy solution here that I’m missing, as it should not be this hard to include a title on a piece.
If you will allow me a wee bit of a Finale refugee rant, things like this are the most challenging things to deal with in Dorico. Why are there 3-4 different places where you have to get the settings just right to do one simple thing ? I would never have found that box to tick in the layout options on my own, and am likely to forget it 6 months from now when I start a new project as it’s so obscure. I knew it would be a steep learning curve, but the way Dorico spreads its functions around multiple menus, libraries, and options makes it really hard to learn. One missed box ticked in a buried menu and you’ve wasted hours of time.
Anyway, the upside is that you folks on the forums always come through, so I’m most grateful for that. I do feel like I’m learning, and I’m sure to have it all figured out by 31 Feb 2112.
Because there are thousands of options to play with and everyone’s (simple) needs are different. I, for one, have never wanted to put a flow title in the First Page template.
One thing very important to learn is the field of actions of every kind of options.
Engraving options are for the whole document (all layouts, all flows)
Notation options boundaries are Flows (Flow 1 and 2 can have very different notation options)
Layout options boundaries are Layouts. Full score can have very different layout options than parts…
Once this is very clear in your mind, you can understand why there are different places for options even though you would not use them in different flows or layouts (or use them in all… everybody’s needs are different!)
Thanks all, I hear you. I’ll come to appreciate the flexibility I’m sure, and the general concept that Marc has laid out here is very helpful.
For what it’s worth, I’m fully sold on Dorico at this point as a huge improvement on Finale, despite these frustrations along the way. I managed to import an 11-movement suite and get it printed out, and the parts look fantastic. So, I’m committed and on board, despite the grumpy posts. Thank you!
