Tracks renaming and renumbering with PLE issue, with folders as groups

I’m not sure what am I doing wrong - sometimes it works and sometimes not. Here is my PLE preset to rename (and renumber) selected tracks names:

So it should rename selected tracks with new names: “vox 1”, “vox 2” and so on. And sometimes it does. But very often it starts counting/re-numbering not with number 1, but with other numbers - like “vox 13”, “vox 14” and so on. Why? Am I missing something?

Hi, @Starnaf

Doesn’t seem to happen here, but I could be wrong, though, my testing maybe not being deep enough. Just in case, an alternate way to do what I think you look for could be this :

This will also rename all the selected tracks to testR and append an order number to each of them in an incremental way, starting from the number defined in Parameter 1 (14, here). Warning : strangely, the Renumber option must be first selected in Parameter 2…

This preset you’ve shown does excalty same as mine. It looks like Cubase sometimes cannot reset the counter and stores some other track numbers in memory and when you want start renumbering some other tracks names with 1 - it continues counting some old list - and starts with higher number instead of 1. Not sure how can I reset Cubase na force it to start always with number 1 if I want.

I can’t think of a way either, beside the usual troubleshooting routine, when Cubase starts to behave erratically : using it in Safe Mode, with the Disable program preferences option. But I guess that you tried that, already.

Something I forgot to ask : is there a kind of pattern in your actions in Cubase that could be correlated with your misbehaving PLE scheme ?

Not really. It usually happens in bigger project (50-100 tracks). I work with a lot of vocal tracks with many singers. When new singer comes I just create new tracks for her - without individual naming them at this point - so Cubase creates tracks Audio 01, Audio 02 and so on. When recording all tracks is over, to keep things in order I want to rename them with the name of a singer - so I run my PLE preset to replace the existing names with for examples “Anna 1”, “Anna 2” and so on. A the result is - Cubase renames them with random starting number like “Anna 6”, “Anna 7”. It looks is it stores some other 5 tracks/instances of something - and treats my new tracks as a continuation of this list, not as a completely new list to start with 1. Really strange.

UPDATE!

It happens only when tracks I want to rename are in the group folder (each singer has her own group folder - they all are stored in parent folder “Vocals”). When I move the tracks outside the folders - I can rename them correctly with numbers 1, 2, 3, etc. When they are inside group folder it renames it with “6, 7, 8”. What’s interesting there are 5 tracks in this case. When I have 12 tracks in a group folder - it starts renumbering them with “13, 14, 15” etc. Really strange behavior.

Aha ! :light_bulb:

So, it looks like a bug introduced with the folders as groups feature, very recently : as I never tried to use folders that way, I would never have found it myself.

So, I just made a quick test on my end with a folder as group : with the Generate Name command in the PLE, the numbering starts from NbTracks + 1 (NbTracks being the amount of tracks already existing in the folder). In the following example, I created a bunch of 7 MIDI tracks named at their creation as TestMidi. With four of them selected after, and using 1 , as parameter 2, I get TFGMIDI 5 to TFGMIDI 8 and using 10, I get what’s in the screenshot…

From this, I took the liberty to change a little your thread title and tagged it a little more, in order for it to be more visible to the Steinberg crew, as I can confirm the PLE misbehavior. Hope you don’t mind… :slightly_smiling_face:

EDIT : thinking more of it, maybe this is by design to prevent, in a way, the existence of two tracks having the same order number…
