Transpose (Quick)

To transpose a section I have to press T (my shortcut) then in the window +/ -the number I want to transpose by, then press enter. Is there a quick(er) way to do this?
I’d like to press something like T-12,T+4 etc. There’s nothing worse than having to go from +6 to -24 to see if I want a lead line as a bass?
ref: /t/transpose-setup-quick-buttons/645490/3 - doesn’t solve my problem.

Hi,

You can use arrow up/down to transpose the selected MIDI Notes by 1 semitones. So if you want 4 up, press the arrow up 4 times. This is even much faster than T+4, because you don’t have to search for two different keys.

Thanks, that’s still a lot of keypresses -
select part, open it, (double click it), ctrl+A, press my up/ down arrow 24 times…transposing everything for a singer trying to find a key for many parts can be a pain; but even just for myself and my workflow.
I can do an awful lot under MIDI/ Functions (thin data etc) but simple transpose seems so far away.
Even under midimodifiers I can random Target Pitch, but + or - 12, or I can just transpose + 1 Oct…repeatedly.
Also midimodifiers don’t adjust the actual ‘anything’ - ie looking at scores etc.
I did set up my T key to transpose and then in key commands my Y button to transpose by that amount…but only…repeatedly…
I would say more people would use a quick +12, and a quick -12 button, which would make more sense of the “Transpose Setup” window.
thanks again.

Hi,

One octave is Ctrl/Cmd + Arrow Key Up/Down.

@Martin.Jirsak Shouldnt all these functions easily be possible by using the Midi logical editor and assigning a key(combination) to it?

If I am not mistaken transpose is also an operation of MLE. Combined with macros, this should be no big deal to find exactly what you need at one keypress.

Indeed, they are. Cubase comes with a bunch of examples to get you started.

You can also Transpose entire MIDI Parts in the Project Window using the info line.

These are only applied during playback (as is Transposing on the Info Line) and are intended to be non-destructive.

As @Tj99 points out Macros are your friend and could turn this all into a single keystroke. Although I’d personally go for moving by an octave twice rather than 24 half-steps.

I got cubasis 3 for my phone. Funny, not funny - Transpose is 10x easier on that.
And, I have fat fingers

Hi @Martin.Jirsak I’m trying that Ctrol/Cmd + Arrow key up/down to move midi notes an octave higher/lower and it’s not working. Ctrl/ + arrow keys opens up Mac OSX Desktops, and Ctrl + arrow keys does nothing. I want to go in and reassign Ctrol + arrow keys to do this function, but I can’t locate the name in the key command list. What is the name of the key command to move midi notes (not duplicate) one octave?

Thanks

Hi,

  • On Mac it’s CMD + arrow up/down.
  • On Windows it’s Ctrl + arrow up/down.

" that’s still a lot of key presses"
I find it strange to hear this.
Why do you need to transpose in a project so many times?
Any cheap midi keyboard should do this and more.

Ok, up two semitones is VERY common in music - what is the fastest way I can do that? And, have the pitches be correct when I look at a score. Back in my Atari days, my non-musical friends would hit the ‘inspector’ to the left and adjust pitches there, but the actual notes in my parts weren’t actually transposed, just the sounds. As a not-great keyboardist (play guitar) I’d like to transpose some things a) to see what they sound like and b) why do people on forums try to think for contributors? A solution could be press T, window opens and then have a range of numbers easily visible/ and selectable by keystrokes with +/- being an additionally chooseable. Shift/ Alt for octaves, too (as opposed to pressing a tiny up or down arrow to get to where I want). For octaves I can just as easily program my synths…forgive me for being experimental, but it’s not often I can be bothered changing everything into Ab Major as it’s a very fussy process - and has been since the 80’s.

If you are only a guitar player, you must be already spending lots of time on things that are simple for a keyboard player. Why bother to save a few seconds on key presses?
Regards.

I’ll quote myself, from above: 'why do people on forums try to think for contributors? ’

Why bother? Because it could all be so much easier.
