Transposition in Cues

Dopico Pro 6.0/Windows 10/11

Mistakes were made when I started using Dorico - inputing clarinet music in concert pitch instead of transposed pitch and not usinf the cue function. I am now trying to correct these. Concerning cues I had previously written them into the clarinet part and not used the cue function. Now I want to change this.

In order to achieve the correct cue in the clarinet part I copied (transferred) it into the violin staff and got the result given above which is correct but the notes do not follow the keysignature and I get equivalent sharps instead. This can be corrected manually, however, in a large score that takes time. A similar phenominon occurss when the violin notes are now used to create the cue in the clarinet part.

I would be grateful if you could advise.

John, firstly I would clear your score from all manually written cues (in your example clear the violin system):

Then make sure your Clarinet part is entered correctly into the Full Score (check concert via transposed pitch).
In your example the clarinet plays that little Tchaikovsky tune in B-flat Major (concert pitch).
After you have checked your Clarinet part is put in correctly, you can cue it to your violin part (or any other part/player):

Do you know, how to use the native cue function in Dorico? It’s very advanced and deals with everything more or less automatically.
At the end it does not matter which view your Score is showing (concert vs. transposed), when using the Shift-U cue function.
This is the resulting violin part showing the clarinet as cue:

[edit] having another look at your first screenshot, may be you are using the word “cue” in a different meaning? Normally a cue in an instrumental part would be showing another instrument before you enter again after a longer rest.
If you want to have a second staff in the instrumental part, showing another instrument parallel to your own line, this is possible, even if it is quite unusual.
Your uploaded example shows differently from your second screenshot, that’s actually confusing.

I think I understand, however, what I find confusing is the fact that copying the cue notes in the clarinet part to the violin staff results in the first note, C, in the clarinet part being represented as Ais instead of Bes which is what one would expect when the keysignature is Bb major! If I could correct this my problem would be solved..

No they are not John, please have a look (as above): the first note in the cue of the clarinet in the violin part clearly shows a „Bes“ (= B-Flat):

If you open your (edited) project file, as attached to my message above, you can recheck this:

It might be a good idea to have a look at this video (from 7 years ago, Dorico version 1.2 - still valid):

@John_McWilliam What is your desired goal? Do you want to have a cue in the violin part which shows the clarinet part?

Or do you want to have a cue in the clarinet part that shows the violin part?

I’m pretty sure you want the second one, but I want to make sure.

Correct. The original vln cue was manually written into the cl part and I want to change this using the cue function. I copied the original cue into the violin part resulting in the first problem - the notes were correct but were designated with sharps instead of flats (Bes. became Ais etc.). Using this as my new cue in the clarinet part led to further problems.
I am beginning to wonder if my original file is corrupted which would, as previously suggested, require deleting all the cues and manually inputing them again into the vln part.

Good hint, there is indeed a “misprint”. The last note of the second bar is supposed to be c (sounding b flat)

No, your file is not corrupted.
You just did not use Dorico’s cue function Shift-U as intended - instead using methods/habits from an old software. Take your time, watch the video, have a look at the edited file. As a clarinet player, you’ll be delighted to notice that Dorico handles displaying cues for transposed instruments exceptionally well.

Vadian, I noticed that mistake, too - this confirms that the “cue” had been put in manually… Also putting the Violin cue into the Violin part itself is without sense…

Okay. Using your file, here’s how I got what I think you want.

  1. Select everything in the violin staff, delete.
  2. Select everything in the clarinet staff, move it to the violin staff. You can do this by cutting and pasting, or by using right-click, Paste Special, Move To Staff Below. Note that the violin correctly shows the first note as a Bb.
  3. Select the 4 (empty) bars in the clarinet staff.
  4. Open the Cues popover with Shift+U, type violin, Enter.

(Note that cues are hidden by default in full scores, so I turned on Layout Options > Players > Cues > Show cues)
