Transposition to Bb

I’m trying to transpose a part in C to Bb for a clarinet player to play it. The “transpose” feature under the “write” menu will not change the key of the piece. I’m sure that there is some way to do this easily, but I can’t figure it out. Can someone please help?

You don’t actually want to transpose the music – you want a “concert” pitch of C, but a written pitch of Bb for clarinet players.

Dorico lets you create instrumental parts and ‘override’ the clef or transposition. This is done in Setup mode.

Or you can create an additional Player with a Clarinet, and copy the music to that stave.

(Oh, also: the Transpose function will change the key if the key signature is selected.)

Thanks. I appreciate your help.

I’m finding the instructions very technical. This is the type of description that drives newbies and FInale refugees like me bananas:

“You can open the Clef and Transposition Overrides dialog in Setup mode by selecting a layout in the Layouts panel, then clicking Layout Settings in the action bar and choosing Clef and Transposition Overrides.”

It looks like step one is selecting a layout in the Layouts panel in Setup mode, but I have no idea where to find the “Layouts panel.” The interface is quite busy. Can you help? Any assistance would be welcome.

Thanks so much!

If you go into Setup mode, using one of the buttons at the top:

You’ll see that the panel on the right is labeled “Layouts”.

If for some reason you don’t see this panel, then click the expand arrow that you’ll see in the margin.

Sorry if I’m misunderstanding, but are you just trying to display a Bb Clarinet part in transposed pitch vs concert? Or are you trying to transpose down a whole step? (… which is not how Bb Clarinet player reads.) If you just want to switch between transposed and concert, add a Bb Clarinet and Dorico will handle the transposition automatically as you switch between Concert and Transposed views. Gif below:

(Obviously you’ll likely want to assign a shortcut to Toggle Layout Transposition if there isn’t one by default.)

Thanks! The issue was that I never set the key to C major (which is visually indistinguishable from “no key”).

I appreciate your response!

Not if you have View->Signposts shown.

When you start Dorico for the first time, there’s a Guide that walks you through the various parts of the interface for each mode.

You can visit it again from Help > Guided Tour.
