Triple Note-Head vs. Split Stems

Is there any way to create this in Dorico without having to resort to a multi-step/muti-voice workaround? As I’m emulating an original publication the split stem does not work in this instance.

It appears that that’s not possible in Dorico, as mentioned in the manual:

(I’m not sure I entirely agree about split stems being more clear in your example but in any case it can’t be changed).

I’ve been fiddling around to find a workaround but you might even have to resort to adding a notehead and/or accidental as a playing technique.

This was done with the G# in a second voice, setting the Accidental X offset to -3 spaces in Engrave mode and then moving the notehead to the left in Note Spacing within Engrave mode, in that order. And hiding the stem of course. But, as far as I know you can’t propagate manual note spacing changes to other layouts so unless you only have one layout (with not too many of these), this is hardly a workable solution.

Probably others will have helpful answers.

Thanks for the effort, but it’s as I suspected. Not
possible” in Dorico, and the workaround is a bit convoluted and possibly un-copyable. There are many such instances so I might just have to nite the bullet on this. I’ll what I can do. Again, many thanks!

Expanding on what @Zalde suggested, you could enter the G# in a second voice, switch to engrave mode with local properties set globally, and set the following properties:

  • Accidental X offset to -3 spaces
  • Hide stem
  • Voice column spacing offset to -4 7/8 spaces

This avoids the use of note spacing mode and changes these settings in both the score and the part layouts.

Thanks John! I’m going to try an implement all of this now.

It’s working. The secondary issue is that these figures appear numerous times, often with augmentation dots. So, it’s necessary to make the 2nd voice note a quarter note (to eliminate its dot), and then add a Music Text aug. dot to match an place it accordingly. A bit of work to be sure, but the result is successful.

You can instead increase the Rhythm dot X value (and also increase accordingly the Voice column spacing offset):

Yes, I have been doing that as well. But per instance, with different rhythms, it’s a lot of tweaking.
