I have some trombone etudes where I’d like to add positions for some of the notes. Normally that should be available with the fingering popover. I’ve used it for piano fingerings numerous times, but it seems as though it’s not available for trombone. I bring up the popover, insert the number, but nothing appears. Do I have do an enable somewhere in the preferences?
Thanks for your response. It has to be a font issue. I was using the Finale Jazz font, which I prefer for the jazz projects generally, and the position numbers refused to come up. I made some changes in the Font styles panel and the fingerings appeared with what seems like the Bravura text font. It’s not the look want, but I haven’t figured out how to change it. The whole font structure is an impenetrable labyrinth. Is there any place I could go for a concise explanation of what’s going on with fonts in Dorico?
FYI, trombone positions should be written using Roman numerals.
And that solves the font problem?
As a trombonist I have to say, that this is not my experience. If someone has created this rule, he has forgotten to tell the publishers. I could show you lots of examples …
I want to add, that in modern method books and etudes, slide positions are often combined with an indication for the valve (“V” or less common “Q”). You can find something like “V2” or “VV3”, which indicates, that the bass trombonist should press both valves together with the slide position. This wouldn’t work with roman numerals. It could be, that there was a time, where slide positions were indicated using roman numerals, but for modern usage, this is not practical anymore.
And a last addition: I would be nice, if Dorico would allow “V” and “Q” in the fingering popover for trombone positions.
I usually see T (trigger) in combination with roman numerals: TII, bII, TIV, etc.
In which genre do you see this? I do a lot of teaching, and play mainly classical music and sometimes big band, and in the music I play (and teach), I have never seen these markings.
