I am trying to enter a whole note that bends up a half tone and back down.I can’t figure out a way that I have been able to make work. I am a newbie at this. I have never use a glissando or grace notes, which are two ways that Claude suggested and I cannot get to work.
Hi @thorny.staples, you can use a second voice to write the glissando, then suppress the playback for the first voice, and hide stems and notehead for the second voice, eating setting [damned autocorrection
] the end X for the first gliss. to 1, and the start x for the second gliss. line to -1 (so they will touch). :
You can also deactivate the delayed start for the second line, experiment what is best for you:
Dorico file example:
half tone pitch bend on long note.dorico (1.5 MB)
Playback example:
EDIT: you can of course also draw the MIDI pitch-bend manually in the Key editor and add lines (or leave the gliss lines and suppress their playback. And also reactivate playback for the long note and suppress it for the half notes).
Aren’t there actual bend properties? I was playing with the pre/post but I’m no pro with that kind of notation. I figure that’s what they’re there for.
I’m quite confident I’ve had this pattern in that file
Question is: is it for guitar (or fretted instrument), or not?
Actually, saying bend was probably misleading. It is for trombones, possibly also for the violas. I think a glissando up and back is what I want.
Then Christian’s solution should work for you!
In addition, I suggest that you don’t hide the notes. Why not simply write out the gliss as usual? (Only write the bit that Christian illustrated in the blue voice and disregard the fancy stuff.) Christian’s line work is cool, but it’s not as clear as writing the notes.
I would not want to hide the notes. I admit I was using Claude as my helper and what it told me to do to make the glissando did not work for me, just put the abbreviation I gave it in the shift L below the first note. I will actually be a good boy and dig into the documentation tomorrow.
Thanks to all for the responses.
Please ask the experts here before you try that idiot Claude.
I don’t quite understand what you need then.
In your OP you said:
So only one note that bends.
Can you sketch the desired result on paper and post a screenshot of it? (to see how you want it graphically).
Then when we have it, we can try to obtain a correct playback too (which was the purpose of the two hidden notes in my proposed method).
