Hi everyone ! I try to use VSTLive pro 2 for live show with a Scarlett 8I6. I will try to get 2 separate mixes but, for now, my pb is that I can’t get FX in my mix. I create 1 input in “audio connections” set to input 1 Scarlett, and a stereo output 1+2. I create an audio track with input = input 1, output = main output. I insert a reverb and it works…until I lighten the “monitor icon” (it’s normal ?). The pb is that this FX send seems to go to the main output and so… I cannot set any separate mix in the Scarlett mixing software…as my input 1 is also in my VSTlive playback. Is there a solution to keep control (mute, volume, etc…) on a track individually …in the Scarlett mixing software ? A solution could be that VSTLive allows two differents mixes, but I don’t think it’s possible… Thanks for your help !
Not quite sure about your routing.
Insert fx are bound to the channel they are inserted, so for an audio track channel, the graph would be
input (enabled by monitor)->insert fx->volume etc->output to destination (what’s on top of the channel)
Insert fx are used for compressors, eqs etc usually, so they have no impact on anything else but the channel.
Sends are quite different. They send the signal (after processing through the inserts chain) to its target (usually, another channel such as a Group Channel). For instance, if you want to apply reverb to several channels, you create one Group Channel and insert a reverb fx there. Then you can send from multiple channels to that reverb (which is routed to its destination again).
If you want to create Cue Mixes (as you appear to want), create an Output channel. Say your main mix goes to Scarlett 1+2, then you want another mix on Scarlett 3+4, so create an Output Channel and route its destination (top of channel) to the desired output Port. You can choose from the list to have one created for you, or you can create Port associations in the “Devices/Connections/Audio/Outputs”.
Now you can send individual amounts of signals from each channel to this Output Channel, for instance, to create an in ear mix different from the main mix.
If you just want to send the same signal to multiple Outputs, send all those channels to a Group Channel you created, instead of sending directly to an Output Channel. Then you can use that Group Cahnnels’ sends again to send the mixed signal to multiple Outputs (create Output Channels first, as described above).
Btw, if you don’t want or need to record your audio inputs, an often easier way to process audio input signals are Stacks. A Stack is a submixer with its own internal sends and fx which are summed in the Stack channel. Create a Stack, assign an audio Input to it, and you have the Stacks’ inserts, 2 send fx (for reverb, delay etc), and you can further process the Stack Channel which sums all of this, just like you did with the audio track channel.
Hope that helps.
That helps !
I choose the “stack” solution (FX stacks for my case) and it works. With just those observations :
- it’s not that easy, in live use, to grab with the mouse the send slider to handle the dedicated cue mix
- in case of numerous tracks (some with the “e” opened) , I guess the laptop screen will not be wide enough to show all the tracks and channels
- I can now handle 2 separate mixes (main and cue mix) but, I think, as the monitor buttons are opened for live tracks, setting the send slider to zéro doesn’t cut the signal. Remains the dry signal still hearable
- some actions aren’t completed until the mouse is released (to be clear : moving the send slider or switching on/off a button only works when the mouse is released). More, the FX send button has to be switched off/on to be “on” (can be bad on live situation)
- opening the “monitor” button add a short delay (depending on the buffer size - 128 for my case). Is there really no solution to “switch off” the “dry signal” for live tracks ?
I can go with all of that, but i’m facing another pb : building a setlist, I have set a song, all is OK, I add a song, linked to the FX stack (globals), all is OK, I add a third song, and then…I cannot go through the FX stacks. I don’t understand why it’s OK with a second song, but not with a third.
Thanks again for help ! I must admit that, as a beginner, handling setlists, parts, global parts, stacks, global stacks, layers, global layers, tracks, channels is not that easy

and another question, please (I spent half and hour from manual to Internet, but didn’t found out) :
What’s the use of L and R delimiter ? (I wanted a “RTZ” action and finally made a keyboard shortcut - the pre-made shortcut was a combined one (2 keys) - in live situation, only one is better, no ? and why not “home”
Many thanks !
And just a last question : on all the audio tracks (mics, gtrs, etc…), I need to switch the “monitor” button “on” to hear the added FX, but that active state doesn’t seems to be recorded in the setlist (re-opening a setlist shows the monitor button inactive). In that case, I’ll have to click on each tracks of each songs before starting ? Thanks again for help !
There is a preference “Studio/Save Track Monitor Enabled”
Same as Cubase defines the range of the Cycle function (L: left, R: right).
I don’t understand that. RTZ (Return to Zero) is a one-time function. Maybe change the UI type in “Devices/Actions and Shortcuts”.
Default keyboard shortcuts follow Cubase, as we have many Cubase users here.
OK, thanks ! I keep my “home key” for RTZ. Much more intuitive to me with a laptop.
sure, if you just want to send and not hear anywhere else, you just select the destination as output (top of channel).
If you want to send independent mixes, set the send item to “pre”. Then, the main volume fader works independently from the send (send still works when volume is all down).
Cannot reproduce that. When you create a send, it’s on, and unless you switch it off, it stays on, no?
Not sure what you mean, but see the “send pre” comment and picture above.
“cannot go”…What do you mean by that?
Also always try the latest version here.
