Tuplet orientation issue with 2 voices... and my workaround

Greetings fellow Dorico users!

I ran into this just a little while ago and thought I would share this in case others have the same question.

I am writing a part and using 2 voices for split voicing, but V1 is the “low” half notes (minims) and V2 is the triplet eighths (quavers). V2 notes were pointed downstem in V2 and so I proceeded to flip them after entry and got the |-3-| bracket UNDER the parts so it looked like the half-note was part of some obscure triplet. I scratched my head and thought about it for a few moments. What was wrong? The triplets are part of the set on entry, right?

Well, it appears the triplet brace sort of lives a coexistence with the notes affected in a disconnected sort of way. I finally saved and said 'OK, left me try and flip the actual tuplet bracket (brace, etc.) for it and voilà, the bracket flipped and is associated with the beam *above* the notes as I was expecting. Below is a quick screenshot of what I mean, the first groups I had manually already flipped and the rest were pre-flip, just to show what I was encountering. I thought this would be a good spot to post, just in case others run into this. If anyone has a faster idea to enter something like this without having to manually flip everything (it was a quick task, but one that would be nice if I could avoid it later), please enlighten me/us! I am open to learning a faster way to do this!

Best of luck in your composing and happy notating. I hope this helps someone else in a pinch!

After the D4 half is the original presentation of the notes in layout). At the D4 is where I stopped to take a screenshot and create the post to hopefully help others!

Why not just enter the half notes in a downstem voice and the tuplets in an upstem voice to begin with?

Because as I was writing, my idea changed and I had already started one section then went back to revise it. The muse struck me afterwards as I adapted what I was trying to convey into a different voice/feel. I’m sure that has happened to all of us…

In many cases, if you want the tuplet digit to switch together with the notes when you use F, you need to select it.

You could also select the entire bar (or entire section), right click, and choose Voices > Swap Voice Contents.

Thanks @asherber – I forgot that command (well, also switching from Mac to PC is a challenge…) - this would likely have done it. I changed gears in the middle of writing and thus I did the lower part first, then the tuplets above it. I’m also delving into an area of notation I am more “rusty” on (or, should I say an instrument’s notation) so that is another challenge. I need to learn more to sharpen my skills. Perhaps transcribing some existing pieces may be a good learning tool.
