I bought wavelab elements to take advantage of the price discount but I’m a little confused on where to start. My intention is to use it for producing masters that are best for streaming platforms.
I’m finding that the options for loudness processing (for example) is a little confusing. So for a beginner where could I find a YouTube video or a tutorial that can help me get started. I really want to be able to batch process finished albums without having to go through a lot of different steps.
Thank you for the links.
The YouTube videos and presets that Justin created have been extremely helpful!
I think what has confused me is in the audio editor the loudness processing has a number of presets, they are mostly quite different. I’ve found lots of information about LUFS, loudness curves, etc. but I’m not sure why there are such significant differences in some of them. The “Apple Music” setting is close to what I usually aim for as a mix-down, but EBU R-128 at -23 LUFS is so quiet. Isn’t there a standard for streaming platforms as well as CDs?
Also, the CD-text isn’t being written to the CD even though the “Enable CD Text Writing” is checked (see screenshot).
I went ahead and bought the pro version, the sales discounts made it a possibility and I’m really enjoying it. I have hundreds of tracks I want to archive and send to the musicians involved so the batch processor is going to be handy once I’m comfortable with the entire process.
No. Likely because Gracenote database has found another CD that has the same exact number of tracks and same exact track times and thinks you have inserted that CD.
I don’t do this often so I can’t tell you where to look without trying it. myself, but there should be a way to force WaveLab to extract and display the actual CD-Text on your burned CD.
Or if you’re on Mac, here is a script that allows Apple Music/iTunes to read the actual CD-Text on the CD and import it.
Natively, Apple Music/iTunes can’t read CD-Text and only gathers CD info based on Gracenote Database.
Bonjour,
Yes, I’ve had that option selected but it still isn’t working. It’s a minor issue so it’s not holding up my production work. I guess I could submit it as a non-urgent support ticket.
I have noticed though that Wavelab is a bit finicky recognizing the CD/DVD external drive. Again, not a critical issue, just a tad puzzling when MacOS sees it as does the music player.
Did you verify, for example, with a commercial CD, that your CD drive is really capable of reading CD-Text?
Generally, when there is an issue, it’s instead the CD drive is not capable of writing the CD drive.
If you want to be certain that the WaveLab procedure to write CD Text is correct, create a DDP (rather than a CD) then import it as a new montage. You should then see the CD-Text in the new montage.
Once I used the script that Justin suggested the CD player read the CD text accurately in the Apple Music player. I also did what you suggested and yes the imported DDP has all the CD text included. Most CDs I play on my mac reads the CD text automatically, I’m not sure what happened. Anyway, it looks like Wavelab is writing the CD text correctly which is what I needed to verify. (i’m putting together Christmas CDs for friends. Some of them don’t use streaming services at all.)
It’s kind of strange though that the audio files were written as AIFF instead of WAV files, must be an Apple thing I presume.
Next time I am submitting a CD to Gracenote Database I can try to grab a screen shot but you may want to use Apple Music to submit your CD info to Gracenote so that when other people insert the CD, they are proposed with the correct possible CD match because as you see, their version of Apple Music will not read the CD-Text like you would expect.
It’s easy to submit the CD info to Gracenote within Apple Music when you have the CD inserted.
This is just how macOS interprets the audio on audio CDs. Totally normal, and you can change the import settings with Apple Music if you prefer that Apple Music rips the songs into Apple Music in another format.
Do you know if the Gracenote Database also maintains info for streaming releases? I went to their website and wasn’t sure. Considering I won’t be releasing CD publicly (they’re only for friends) maybe the Gracenote Database is irrelevant now. Not sure.
What’s weird is when I insert the Wavelab burned CD then listing the contents using the terminal I can see the audio files are AIFF. But I didn’t rip the CD contents to disk. The montage used to burn the CD is a WAV file … I wonder if there’s something happening in the MacOS to change formats. Mysterious, I don’t recall ever noticing this before.
Using the recommended script I can now see the correct CD text in Apple’s Music player. Yay!
I did have another question (I appreciate your patience with new users). On one of the two Mac laptops I run Wavelab I get a pop saying Wavelab encountered an error with a plugin. But I can’t find evidence on my machine of the plugin ever being installed. Would you have an idea about this?
