Unable to Change Rit Playback in Key Editor

I’m sure I’m just missing a setting somewhere, but I’m having issues manually changing the ending tempo of a rit marking in my score. I want to slow down from q=56 to q=50 in measure 14, so I used the key editor, used the select tool, clicked the key point for the end of the rit and changed its value to 50 on the left, but as you can see in the image, the key editor now shows two lines in the key editor, a blue one and a gray one, and the gray one is the one that’s used for playback (the default 75% rit slowdown which I left unchanged in the properties panel). How do I remove the gray line in the key editor or set playback to use the blue line?

I know I could change the rit playback in the properties panel, but I’d rather set an exact tempo rather than a % in the properties panel.

I did some more digging, and I found this article. I am following its steps exactly, and the article seems to suggest that the suggested tempo playback should change, but it does not. Instead, it plays back according to the gray line instead of the blue line. Am I missing a setting somewhere?

Edit:
To add to the confusion, after making these tempo changes, if I save the project, close Dorico completely, and then reopen the file, my tempo changes aren’t saved. Otherwise I’d upload my dorico file so someone could check if something is messed up with my project. So, it seems like my tempo change isn’t being applied even though it visually looks like it has. Also, if I change any other end point in the tempo editor, the gradual tempo change that I previously modified in the tempo editor reverts back to its original settings (the gray line).

From what I can tell, the steps in the article seem to work if you draw a line in the tempo editor but haven’t converted it into a gradual tempo change. Can anyone confirm that the playback of gradual tempo changes cannot be modified by the key editor? Everywhere I search for this online it seems like gradual tempo changes should be editable in the key editor.

Yes, it should be possible to edit gradual tempos in the Tempo editor. Try this:

  1. Start a new project, e.g. based on the Piano template, with a few bars.
  2. Select one or two bars’ rest, type Shift+T to open the tempo popover, and enter rit. into the popover, then hit Return.
  3. Open the Key Editor in the lower zone; it should already have the Tempo editor shown, because you have a tempo selected.
  4. The rit. is shown as two selected points in the Tempo editor: clear the selection, then click the point that corresponds to the right-hand end of the rit.
  5. Drag it up or down to change the final tempo value at the end of the rit.

This procedure should also work in your own project. If it doesn’t, would you feel comfortable attaching the project you’re working on here, so we can take a look? You can make a copy of the project and cut it down to just the affected bars if you don’t want to share the whole thing.

Thanks for your help Daniel!

I was able to get it to work in a new project and some places in my current project. After a process of elimination, I discovered that my issue was caused by a metronome marking and a rit. marking appearing at the same point in the score. If I removed the metronome marking or suppressed the playback of the metronome marking, then I was able to modify the rit. playback in the tempo editor.

So I suppose a conflict between simultaneous immediate and relative tempo markings can cause this issue to happen, but I can work around this pretty easily now that I know the cause.

I need this frequently. Thank you!
