i have had this before but can not recall how to fix… The file has been imported from finale XML and i wish to show repeat X times but can not.
i think there is hidden data somewhere that is preventing this. I am fairly sure it is set to display in the engrave options.

The problem ist your over-all repeat structure. Dorico wants to “understand” how repetitions are set up, and yours is a bit dubious.
Delete the very last repeat sign and the text “Repeat 3 times” will show up over the one remaining repeat sign.
Sorry- my mistake. I feel like an idiot now. 
This was just a sample of the file, hence the missing/dubious repeat mark you commented on. However, I found a similar “missing” repeat mark later in the score which had a knock-on effect to all repeat marks in the whole piece.

Is there a setting or signpost or a checking-tool to warn of bad or missing repeat marks or other “scoring fails”?
One clue to an invalid repeat structure is that repeats don’t play at all, because it gets turned off. (You can see the warning in Playback Settings.) Another clue is if bar numbers go missing.
