Unable To Install or Uninstall Dorico 5 Pro

The issue with missing permissions can pop up even if you are running as admin in Windows. The Windows Installer subsystem requires access by the SYSTEM group, there is an article in the WIndows community forum, that explains how to fix this.

Thanks for replying JuergenP.

I tried that but the problem persists.

Did you try to install via the Steinberg Download Assistant?
If so, I’d try a different way as well:

  • Download the Dorico installer via the Steinberg website from here and unzip it.

  • First try to invoke the installer as normal and if it does not work, do a right click on the Setup.exe and from the pop-up menu choose ‘Run as administrator’.

  • If that still fails, go to the C:/Program Files/Steinberg folder, right click on it and chooses ‘Properties’. In there go to the ‘Security’ tab, does the SYSTEM group have Full Control check marked?

Ok, can you please see if the properties on your system are the same as in these screenshots (sorry for the german interface, but most entries should be obvious)

First do a right-click on C:\Program Files\Steinberg and you get a screen like this

Now click on the button “Advanced” (“Erweitert” in the screenshot in the lower right corner). Now in the next screen check if you see the same entries like here

In case the TrustedInstaller and SYSTEM do not have full access click on the button circled in red and change them. Make sure that all permissions will be inherited by folders and objects below Steinberg.

After that restart your PC and try the installation again.

Ulf, yes I’ve tried to install using the Download Assistant and as Administrator.
I’ve also tried the Steinberg folder with SYSTEM group permissions Full Control.

Thanks for the screenshots JuergenP. I had tried it with the SYSTEM full access and restarting without success.

I tried a very basic temporary clean install of Windows 11 23H2 on a spare drive then tried a basic install of Dorico 5.1.10 and this installed perfectly first time.

I think the best thing for me moving forward is now to do a full clean reinstall of Windows 11. I’ve made a start and it will take a few days to complete but I think this may be quicker, cleaner and more secure in the long run.

Thanks everyone for all your help; it really is appreciated. I’ll post back when completed hopefully with news of complete success.

Best wishes.

As promised I’m posting back after a clean install.

I completed this over last weekend and, once again, Dorico Pro 5.1.10 installed perfectly the first time and has performed flawlessly since then.

Thanks once again to everyone who helped with this. I’ve marked this thread as resolved.
