Unable To Install or Uninstall Dorico 5 Pro

I Have Dorico Pro 5 on Windows 11.

I tried to install the 5.1.10 version but this failed and following this was unable to open my existing version 5.1.

I thought to completely uninstall Dorico and to start again. When I tried to reinstall Dorico 5, the installer failed with an error message: 1638 (saying another version is already installed and to uninstall first through Control Panel). There is no Dorico listed there so I tried to use the ‘Download Assistant’ to uninstall. This too failed and, again, with the same 1638 error message.

I have tried all the usual things of rebooting, opening installs as ‘Administrstor’, searching for locked folders, redownloading files, uninstalling/installing in Safe mode and disabling Windows Security.

I am now in the situation of not having any Dorico at all and not being able to install (or uninstall as per error message) any of the Dorico versions (including Dorico 4).

I have no trouble at all with any other programs on my computer, including a load of music programs which are all working fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

MichaelB, two suggestions:

  1. try installing directly, without the Download Assistant:
Dorico Pro 5 Updates and Downloads | Steinberg

  2. Another possibility is to first download the newest version of the Download Assistant and go from there:
    Steinberg Download Assistant | Steinberg

KB Thanks for replying and your suggestions.

I had tried both of those yesterday multiple times. However, I tried them again with a new downloaded of ‘Download Assistant’.

Unfortunately this did not work so, as I wrote in my post, I’m still without any Dorico at all unable to go forwards or back with a load of projects to do.

Thanks again for your help.

Please try Microsoft’s Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter, which you can find here:

Thank you for replying Daniel.

Yes, I tried that a few times. When opened it asks me to browse to the program I’m trying to install / uninstall. However I’m unable to do this as Dorico is not showing anywhere so can’t be selected.

I have tried deep searching for the reported ‘install’ of Dorico on my system but there is absolutely nothing.

It does not appear as ‘Dorico’ but as ‘Steinberg Dorico’ in the list of apps, did you realize this?

Thanks ulf.

Yes thanks I did check for both names, just to be certain.

And if you try to install it again, Windows says it is already installed? Is that correct?

Yes, that’s correct.

Also if I try to uninstall it says the same thing ie “Dorico 5 removal failed. Another version of this product is already installed … Error code 1638.”

I’ve tried this with the installers of the different versions I have.

I googled a bit on Error 1638 and found this webpage. It’s worth a try following that one.

Yes, I found that too yesterday.

In the solved post, the author refers to an error file for support containing information for the main product code. Unfortunately, the error message I have does not give any such information of any registry product code for me to act on.

The only thing in that post I can try is the manual process of a registry search and uninstall every registry item referencing Dorico.

Yes, sounds pretty tedious, but cleaning up the registry by hand seems to be the way to do it…

Well, I went through the registry manually referencing every mention of Dorico and Steinberg Dorico and deleted every reference. The registry was totally cleared of Dorico and all its components were uninstalled.

Unfortunately I still have that same error message saying that there is a version of Dorico already installed. This is impossible; a full search of my system and the registry shows nothing, not a single mention.

Unless there is an installer that will override any existing install it seems I am facing a new clean Windows 11 install.

I guess it is not only about the name ‘Dorico’ that you have to prune out but as that article suggest also any link to the Dorico class id. Do you want to know the Dorico id?

Yes please, if you would give me the ID I can check for that too.

Here we go: 1CEBC3BB-9399-45A7-A77A-E968545610D7

Thank you Ulf.

Running that ID in the Microsoft diagnostics tool has removed the Dorico installed status and the install status now reads "Dorico 5 will be installed.

However, now I am getting the message that “The installer has insufficient privileges to access the directory” even though I have taken ownership.

What if you run the installer with admin rights?

And is there any hint of which directory it refers to?

Yes, I run the installer with admin rights.

[Quote] And is there any hint of which directory it refers to? [Unquote]
The message refers to: C:\ProgramData\Steinberg\Dorico 5

It seems that it creates the Dorico 5 folder at first, then cannot write to it. However there is no such folder when I follow the path so I’m unable to take ownership. The folder must be removed by the installer on closing. I did try manually adding a Dorico 5 folder in the Steinberg directory but this idea didn’t work.
