Unable to upgrade to Cubase 13

I received a message saying my update to Cubase 13 Grace period was about to expire. I immediately began the steps of Upgrading and Registering my license/s. Thus began days of failed attempts and confusing messages and repetition of the processes.
I submitted a ticket and followed the steps in the articles suggested but still am unable to register neither the e-licenser nor the old USB that I have been using for 20 years!
Please can someone help me get this sorted as I have given up after a month of trying to get ANY license to work.
I purchased Cubase Pro 11 on July 31st of 2021, but hadn’t downloaded it, so the last version registered on my dongle would have been Cubase 6.5.

Using MAC OS Monterey.

Thanks so much for your help!

Which OS? It often makes a difference.

I find your post a bit confusing - which version are you upgrading from? You can only upgrade to version 13, not version 12, and that upgrade requires a change in the authorising process. (Your dongle licence is converted to the new system, in place since v12.)

Also, I assume you’ve installed the very latest versions of the e-licenser/activation manager and download “Assistant”?

Also, the download status of Cubase has no bearing - Steinberg is only interested in authorisations. Also, Registering and Authorising are 2 entirely separate things.

I’m not too hot with this kind of problem, but these are the basics.

Thanks for your reply.

To answer your questions -

Mac OS 12.6 Monterey

As I mentioned, I had purchased Cubase Pro 11 and had not yet downloaded it, so the last version I had registered on my dongle would have been Cubase 6.5.

Yes, I meant to write that the grace period upgrade message I received was for upgrading from Cubase 12 to Cubase 13.

I have installed the very latest versions of e-licenser/activation manager and download assistant.

I’m on Windows, Steinberg’s software has some subtle differences between OSs, so hopefully a Mac user will chime in soon, and with a bit of luck sort you out.
It’s also 3:30 am where I am so I’m off to bed!

OK, buenas noches : )

If the last version you bought was Cubase 11, and you haven’t registered the download code then, you’re not in any ‘Grace Period’, especially considering you never activated that license yet, or bought 12. You’re still holding a brand new license that’s never been activated.

You should be able to enter the Download Access Code in either the Download Assistant or at Steinberg’s website. It will put everything it needs to in the appropriate place and everything should be all fine and dandy after that.

I have tried to do exactly that and it just doesn’t seem to work.

The screen pops up with a big green tick saying " Your e-licenser with the number blah, blah, blah, was successfully registered."
And underneath this line it reads - " Currently there is no valid Steinberg product license found on this e-Licenser.

In the eLicnese Control Centre and where it says Select License to Upgrade, the USB and the e-license are greyed out and have the red circle of ‘no can do’ displayed.

I’m a little confused… You enter the code in the Download Assistant, or at the website, and that should immediately give you a license for 13, which is then put in your Steinberg Activation Manager and should show up fairly quickly. The system won’t/can’t activate new licenses for anything below 13 regardless of when you bought it.

Unless you left out the part that the license to 11 was an upgrade and not a full version. Then you may need to talk to Steinberg about the issue with the eLicenser.

I’m also a little confused.

The license to Cubase 11 Pro is a full license not an upgrade. If the system can’t/won’t activate new licenses for anything below 13, then it’s likely a case of me trying to get Cubase 11 Pro downloaded and see if I can go from there? It may possibly do it if the version is installed, USB connected, and all the stars align.

No, that’s not how Steinberg works. Regardless of what version you bought, you get whatever the current version is when you redeem it. If you go on Ebay and somehow buy a brand new version of Cubase 7, and activate the license, you are going to get Cubase 13.

You should have been given a ‘Download Access Code’ of some sort with your 11 license. You need to go enter the code in the Steinberg Activation Manager and it will give you your license to Cubase 13. Turn off the eLicenser software and use the current license manager, the eLicenser is dead and gone now…

Yes, that’s what I though and that is what I had been trying to do. Although I hadn’t realised the e-license software is now redundant and the eLicense Manager is the only one I need. I will do as you suggest.

Now that sounds different. Did you possibly try entering that and some point and forgot about it or left it alone for a bit?

I would get in touch with Steinberg support ASAP and see if they can sort that out. From the error, it sounds like the DAC was already used at some point and they gave you a time period to actually activate the license. I don’t recall that happening here because when I got my free update to 12 (I bought 11 when they announced 12 was coming out), I was here at home that day so I did everything almost instantly from upgrading the eLicenser and activating the new license and firing up C12 right away. The eLicenser was only needed for folks going from the older versions to 12, and it changed the license on the dongle to let you know it was upgraded to the new Steinberg licensing…

IIRC there were people that had been holding on to licenses for over a year when 12 came out and they were able to jump right in to it when they finally activated them.

Yes, I suspect that there was something in the minuscule fine-print that mentions a time frame regarding downloading after purchase date. I will just have to contact them again and hope they reply with a suggestion that is more than the articles I have already read through and implemented the steps, without success!
