Unmix song in SLP 13 vs 12

@Robin_Lobel: Is the quality of the Unmix song feature improved in SLP 13 as compared to 12? I am only concerned with the quality of the resulting audio stems, not the processing time etc.

Specifically, I am interested in Unmix song: Drums, Bass, and Vocals.

I would be very grateful for a reply.

All the best,

Magnus

Hi Magnus, I am also interested in this result. Specifically I will be testing the ability to separate lead and backing vocals. I am waiting on a trial for 13 but as of last night it is not available.

@Magnus_N @peter.j.cyr See this topic here:

https://forums.steinberg.net/t/is-the-core-unmix-song-separation-improved-in-any-way/

Thank you for pointing me to this topic. I have already seen it, however. May I humbly ask how you know that nothing has changed in regard to Unmix song?

I was hoping to have this confirmed or refuted by Robin himself - or at least Steinberg - so started this topic here.

All the best,

Magnus

Hi @Magnus_N you may only see marginal improvements to Unmix Song due to some background SL engine improvements, but probably nothing really noticeable.

However there are indirect improvements that directly benefits song unmixing:

Modules like Ambience Fill can be applied to the Other layer to fill the frequencies that may be missing after removing everything else from the mix for instance.

Modules like Unmix Two Voices can also be applied to separate two singers after you unmixed vocals.

Similarly, the new Unmix Sound Effects can likely be applied to further separate the Other layer after an Unmix Song, in some circumstances (to separate a foreground instrument other a continuous strings or pads background for instance).

The improved Unmix Components module will also better separate transients from tonals and noise through the spectrum range, which is often useful to separate instrument components.

Thank you, @Robin_Lobel, for clarifying. 12 was a huge improvement over 11 in this regard so I was hoping for at least some further enhancements. I am quite happy with the results I get in 12 so will probably stay on 12 for the moment.

All the best and thanks for SLP,

Magnus
