Unplugging Headphones Disables Audio

I normally work with external speakers but when traveling, I use headphones. (Sometimes I get away for a few days to focus on a piece with no distractions.)

Situation:

  1. MS Surface with Windows 11 and Dorico 6.
  2. Headphones plugged into the Surface work fine.
  3. I unplug them to play music on the built in speakers and I get no sound from Dorico.
  4. Sources other than Dorico (e.g., YouTube, mp3, test tone) play over speakers.
  5. I plug headphones back in and now get no sound from Dorico on headphones.
  6. I have to quit and restart Dorico.

Basically, unplugging the headphones disables Dorico audio but not PC audio.

I checked device status on the PC and Preferences in Dorico and didn’t see anything wrong.

Any ideas? Thank you.

Look in the forum for Aggregate device. There surely is a tutorial for macOS, but perhaps others for PC too.

Hey, Michael. Thanks. Are you saying this is normal, expected behavior? I will search as you suggest. It seems odd.

@michaelstarobin

Hey, man. I appreciate the regerence, but–and maybe I’m dumb–but I couldn’t figure out what to do with the info in the thread.

Konrad, could you post a screenshot of the dialog window shown when clicking on Edit > Device Setup? If the Steinberg ASIO Driver or the Generic Low Latency ASIO Driver is selected, please click on Device Control Panel and post a screenshot of that window as well.
Maybe there are settings that change when you plug in the headphones.

I believe it is expected that changing audio device interrupts audio output for Dorico.

My knowledge on specific audio things is very limited, though.

Is this something to do with Windows ‘ allow exclusive control’ of audio devices? Worth checking. This often causes issues but I cant comment further as I cant see into your PC! :-1:

I will check that as soon as I am in gront of the computer. That “exclusive audio” thong has been a pest in the past. Thanks.
