A while back I wanted to set up a few staves that do not show up in my Concert Band score such as String Bass (which would double Tuba for the most part). Well, I have configured something wrong. I have the “unscored” String Bass part set up but when I open the String Bass Part and add bowings, they are showing up on my Tuba staff as well. When I delete them from the Tuba Staff, they disappear from the String Bass Part. Somehow I have linked together the String Bass and Tuba parts and can’t figure out how to separate them. I can send a Dorico file if that is helpful.
Thank you.
If I remember correctly, you’ve got two layouts (string bass and tuba) using the same player.
A layout is just a view of one or more players in a score. Layouts based on the same player can have independent clefs and transpositions, but everything else in them is the same — change a note in one layout (or in the score), and you’ll see the change in the other one, because it’s the underlying material that gets changed.
So if you add bowings, or text, or anything else, in one’s the layouts, it will show up in the other as well. Edit: But you can selectively hide items in individual layouts; see below.
If you want bowings in one layout but not the other, then the layouts will have to use different players — but this also means that if you change a note in one layout, you have to remember to change it in the other as well.
asherber,
As usual, you pull me from the mire when I get stuck. This all makes perfect sense. I think I will go with the seperate player idea.
P.S. Just got Dorico 6 yesterday so the learning process begins again. I guess it never ends.
Thanks again.

One follow-up question. I am assuming if I go into the Tuba part and hide the bowings in the Properties Panel in that part, it will also hide them in the String Bass Part.
Correct?
Also, is it possible to set up a separate String Bass Player but have that player not show up in the Score. I want the un-scored part but want to be able to edit each individually.
Thank you. Sorry so many questions.
Actually, that would work well, as long as you have “Set local properties” set to “Local” in the Properties panel. After you enter your bowings, you can select one in the tuba layout and then press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+A (Select More) a couple of times to select all of them in the layout and then hide them at once. (It doesn’t look like Select More expands to all playing techniques, which is good in this case.)
Edit: I learned something new about the powers of Select More. From the manual:
- Playing techniques: The selection expands only to playing techniques of the same category, such as Strings or Choral. Additionally, if you select either an up bow or down bow playing technique, the selection expands only to other up bow and down bow playing techniques. It does not select any other playing techniques.
Yes, you can do that too, if (for example) you actually wanted some different notes in the two parts. In Setup mode, you would just select the score layout in the right-hand panel (so that it turns bright blue) and then untick the string bass player in the left-hand panel.
It sounds like this is the option I would want to go with rather than messing with the Properties Panel due to the fact that the Tuba and the String Bass will need switch to different octaves in spots due to range requirements as you mention above. So it sounds like I am setting up a completely new player that simply won’t show in the score but I can print a String Bass Part that is different than the Tuba part in various aspects such as range and Playing Techniques.
That second option worked beautifully to create the un-scored part. You are my hero
