Update to version 6.0.20 (from 6.0.10) doesn't work

I installed Dorico 6.0.10 on my computer just before version 6.0.20 was announced. Well, I downloaded the installer for version 6.0.20 to update my installation in place, only to be greeted with two error messages.

Worse yet, after this, I was left without even Dorico 6.0.10 on my computer. Overwriting the old version is obviously part of the upgrade process, but this was not rolled back when the installation failed. I tried the Dorico 6.0.20 installer again - a clean installation of sorts - but I got the same error messages again.

Are you using the Steinberg Download Assistent? I had no trouble with that.

No, and I don’t use the Download Assistant in general. Since Steinberg lets me just have the installation files (which is my preference, anyway), and that worked just fine for version 6.0.10, I can’t imagine that I suddenly need to start using it now. Perhaps there’s a problem with the standalone installer, but I’d much rather it just be fixed, then.

The first thing I would suggest is restarting your computer, then try running the Dorico 6.0.20 installer again, and choose the “Repair” option when it’s presented to you.

If that doesn’t help, please try Microsoft’s Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter:

You should be able to clean up whatever reference to Dorico 6 is left on your system such that you can run the installer again successfully.

Hi @dspreadbury,

Ever since the first installation attempt (that saw Dorico 6.0.10 removed), the installer considers Dorico 6 to be removed/not installed. So, the installer simply says “Install”, and there is no “Repair” option.

I tried the troubleshooter, but it did not help - probably because Dorico 6 is now considered to be no longer installed and so it does not appear on the list of programs.

Is there any place to look for a log file from the Dorico installer? I can share it if I know where to look.

I believe you can use the Microsoft troubleshooter even if a program isn’t listed in the uninstall options as long as you have the product code for it. The product code for Dorico 6 (all versions) is 7C00804A-783F-4550-9E91-57E4375B23E4.

Possibly, but I embarked on another route before your reply, so I don’t think that I would be able to do that anymore. What ended up working for me is (1) using System Restore to revert my system to a state before Dorico 6 was first installed in any variant; and (2) installing Dorico 6.0.20 and all supporting packages from scratch.

I wanted to start using the latest version of Dorico partly to assess its latest features and partly to make an updated commentary on what I would like to see next. It looks like I will be able to do that now, but what worries me is that I will have to repeat this experience every time a Dorico maintenance update is released.
