What more-current version will run my Studio 4 projects? I see 8.5 is still available. Will that do it? Will the version 9 products run the Studio 4 projects?

In any case, you can always buy an upgrade to the very latest version only. So in this moment, you would buy Cubase 9 license. Then, you can try, if Cubase 9 opens your projects, or not. If not, you can use older Cubase version, with the license. Like C8.5, 8, 7, etc.
I would expect, Cubase 9 will open the project too. There is no change from Cubase 8.5 to Cubase 9 in this area.
