Upstrokes and downstrokes - guitar picking dorico 5

I need to indicate the direction of picking (upstrokes vs. downstokes) for some notes in a jazz guitar piece (standard notation, not tabs!!!). I can not find a way to do this in the manual, doing a search of this forum, or doing a general web search, youtube search, etc. Surely, Dorico Pro 5 must give one a way to do this? Please help! Thanks!

Welcome to the forum @rory

Standard notations are available in Guitar Playing Techniques…

Welcome to the forum.

You can also enter these via the Playing Techniques Popover (Shift+P) by entering the text Strum up or Strum down

If you don’t like the text you need to use, you can edit what they are via Library > Edit Playing Techniques e.g. su/sd

Thank you so much for your replies, Daniel and Janus. Unfortunately, these arrows, used for showing chord strumming, are not what I’m looking for. Ironically, the icon for “playing techniques” in general shows just the upstroke and downstroke symbols (for picking an individual note) I’m looking for, but when I go the the guitar techniques list, it does not offer these. Daniel, it looks like you’re showing me a way I could create these symbols myself in “edit playing techniques” but it would really surprise me if Dorico does not have these and I have to try to create them from scratch! Is there a way to access the two symbols that, together, make the “playing techniques” icon and are the standard way to show picking an individual note with an upstroke or downstroke? Thanks!

In my experience these arrows are also used for individual notes.

But what exact signs are you looking for?

Possible the up down symbols under strings? I know for bowing commonly

Hi Janus - At least in jazz guitar, those arrows are not what is used, but I finally figured out a kludge solution: if I go to the “string” category, the “upbow”-> single/above appearance, and the “downbow” → single/above appearance are the correct symbols. Sure took a lot of searching, and no solution shown in the 1,940 page user manual for this version of Dorico - a search for “upstroke” or “downstroke” or even “picking” produces no matches! But glad to have figured it out, with your help. Thanks again for your replies!

Ah, thanks gdball, I’d just found this and typed my reply when your note came in, thanks!

The popover text for these is upbow and downbow but I’ve changed mine to up and dn.

Kludge? Those symbols have been upbow/downbow for hundreds of years. If jazz guitar has appropriated them, fine, but you are the late-comers.

Heh, you should see what I appropriate for synthesizers. I think of it as the continuation growth and refining of notation…

I have no problem with appropriation. I only resent the assertion that because the sign is located in its traditional (and continued use) location, its absence elsewhere represents a kludge.

Sorry Janus, I did not mean to offend with the word “kludge” - it’s just that this is something that is so standard in guitar notation, and Dorico shows things such as 9th string and half-open-wah in guitar notation (i.e. very rarely used things - do you know anyone who is a 9-string guitar player other than Egberto Gismonti from Brazil?), yet requires a user to think to look in the string section under bowing marks. Could simply use the same symbols in the guitar section and call them upstroke and downstroke! But did not mean to offend, thanks again for everyone’s help!
