UR22mkii not passing a clean audio signal to DAW

Audio signal from keyboards is getting passed through very faintly, not recordable to Ableton. Mic signal is fine. Can hear keyboard fine through headphones attached to interface. Have tried other cables, other keyboards.

Hi,
there’s a Mix knob on the UR22. Where is it at? If it’s mainly on Input and not DAW you don’t hear what’s happening in your DAW.

  • Make sure to have a proper signal gain at the UR22 (check the clipping indicators)
  • Make sure to check your incoming level in Ableton and set the gain accordingly (reminder: UR22 - Mix knob 100% on DAW)

Thanks for the reply. When I put mix on 100% DAW I get no sound at all through the headphones. When on 100% input, I sound is fine.

Okay, so there is no signal coming out of your DAW.

I am not familiar enough with Ableton and unfortunatly that’s where you need to sort things out. The UR22 is fine since you can hear the direct signal if you turn the mix knob. In other words: your incoming signal from the keyboard arrives and also leaves your audiointerface.

Check in Ableton:

  • is the routing correct (input channels assigned to the tracks)?
  • is there a monitor or record enable button you need to activate?
  • check the incoming level in your DAW and adjust the gain on the UR (don’t apply Hi-Z to your second channel, your keyboard is a line input) and/or in Ableton

While doing this leave the mix knob at 100% DAW - that’s what you want to hear.

Thanks for the follow up.

The routing and record enabling is working fine – I can get a good audio signal from a mic plugged into that input channel.

I do get an audio signal from the keyboard when plugged in but it is faint and static-y when going through the DAW, clear and strong when going 100% input.

How do you go out of your keyboard and into the UR22?
Please make sure to use unsymmetrical cables going into the UR22 and phantom power should be disabled (I think it is per default if you don’t use XLR, not sure though).
As I said, the signal seems to be fine coming into the UR22 and going out. Have you tried to level up the input gain on the UR22?

Using a standard TS instrument cable from the L/Mono output. Phantom power is off. I’ve turned input gain all the way up.

I think at this point you can rule out the UR22 as a potential culprit. It is very likely that your signal way in Ableton is not properly set up. Maybe someone in the Ableton forum might help you? As I said, I am not familar with Ableton.

Since audio comes through to Ableton properly when I connect a mic on the same input channel, I don’t think the problem is in Ableton. It seems like some in wrong with the interface’s handling of the line level signal.
