System:
-
MacBook Pro 16″ (2019 Intel)
-
macOS Monterey 12.7.4
-
Logic Pro X
-
Steinberg UR44C interface
After installing the latest Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver v3.1.7, Logic recognized the UR44C as output only — no input channels and no microphone access.
macOS appeared to be using its built-in USB class driver instead of the Steinberg driver.
Here is everything required to restore normal operation:
-
Uninstall all previous Steinberg/Yamaha USB drivers.
-
Reinstall v3.1.7.
-
Boot into macOS Recovery (⌘ + R).
-
macOS requested login with an old Apple ID, which required several attempts, a failed SMS verification, and finally a call with Apple Support to unlock.
-
In Recovery, open Utilities → Startup Security Utility and enable “Allow user management of kernel extensions.”
-
Restart macOS and allow “Yamaha Corporation” in System Preferences → Security & Privacy.
-
Restart again, then plug in the UR44C.
-
UR44C finally appeared in Audio MIDI Setup with full I/O (8 in / 4 out).
-
Logic Pro could now select it as both Input and Output and request microphone permission.
Only after completing all these steps did the interface function normally.
This process is far too complex for what should be a simple USB installation.
Other audio interfaces I own (MOTU, Focusrite, Audient) connect immediately with no Recovery-mode security changes or Apple-ID involvement.
Feedback:
-
Please migrate Steinberg’s macOS drivers to Apple’s DriverKit/System Extension model.
-
Provide clear installation guidance and troubleshooting instructions for current macOS versions.
-
Make support contact information easier to find on the website.
The UR44C hardware itself performs very well once operational, but the software experience is outdated and unnecessarily difficult.
Thank you for your attention.
