Using a UR22C with an external USB Hub

Is it possible to use a UR22C with a passive external USB hub? I am using external power but even though the computer (Google Pixelbook) recognises the UR22C it is inactive. When I plug directly into the Pixelbook all is well and the interface works properly.

It should work, but maybe ChromeOS is a bit finicky about using usb hubs?
Or some usb hubs may not be fully compliant?

If you identify the issue, I’d be curious for an update…

Page 12 of the Steinberg manual says to make sure that when using USB for power then it should not be connected through a hub. When I connect through the hub, the interface powers up and is visible as an input/output device on the Pixelbook. However there is no sound output from the UR22C. This is also the case when I power the interface from an external power supply. However, if I connect directly to the computer all is well and the interface works. So it isn’t a power issue.

The problem is that the Pixelbook has but two USB ports, one is needed for the psu and the other for everything else which makes the use of a hub very important. I have solved my problem by using a very old USB audio interface which does work on the hub. I don’t need the inputs for this job but it would be nice to solve the problem for the longer term.

Agreed already from your original post that it’s not a power issue, and what you describe should work.
That’s why I suspect either your hub, or more likely ChromeOS is not fully spec compliant.
(prob. some flag is not set properly during enumeration/discovery through a hub.)
I use a 44c with an Anker USB-C hub on a ‘regular’ Win10 laptop and all is fine.
