Using different time signatures in different parts at the same time, er moment

Hello everyone! I’m currently trying to save a few parts from an old victor Herbert piece written in 1917, timpani and cornets 2 and 3 to be specific. The pages were moldy and stuck together, blah blah blah. BUT! I discovered that between rehearsal marks H and I the cornets started playing in 3/4 time while the timpani keeps playing in 9/8! It creates a “hocket-y” effect and all that, but how do I deal with it in Dorico? I can’t just drop a 3/4 time signature into just the cornets without changing it across all the other parts. Is there a way to manage that situation? It happens about 3 times in the piece, so I kind of need a solution.

Yes, you can.

Make sure you have an object or the caret placed on one of those staves, enter your time signature in the popover but close the popover with Alt/Opt+Enter rather than just Enter. This creates a local time signature. Then you can select it and copy to the other staves.

What I’m not sure about is where the barlines will fall.

I figured there had to be a way, Thanks!

I haven’t needed this for awhile now but believe still have to use tuplets to make the bar lines line up. See this earlier post and the linked article in Scoring Notes:

Dorico offers the following flexibilities:

  • You can make any time signature look like any other by defining a pickup bar of the appropriate length.
  • You can make single-staff time signatures with Alt/Opt-Enter.
  • Using custom tuplets, possibly multiple levels deep, you can make any stretch of notes fit into any stretch of rhythmic time.

By those powers combined, what you’re after will definitely be possible. If you’re unsure about the syntax though, please share an example of your specific situation so we can help you in more detail.
