Using Dorico twice on the same Mac

Hi,

my 8-year-old son has begun composing with Dorico. I created an account for him on my Mac and installed Dorico for him. However, whenever I switch the user and don’t shutdown Dorico & NotePerformer, it cannot be opened, saying “Another MediaServer is running. Shutdown?” - If I confirm, it hungs up.

Any possibility to make it work without having the other user to quit the Software (which means to always reload the whole NotePerformer library)?

Dorico is ocupying the audio engine, so you can’t have two instances of Dorico running on the same comp, I think.

I think the VSTs get loaded on a per-machine basis, not a per-user basis, so you would need to close the program in your account before running it in your son’s account.

(On my (Windows) machine, loading NotePerformer doesn’t really slow down the startup of Dorico, so it wouldn’t be that much of a hassle.)

Yes, I was miswriting in my last answer,; i meant to write ‘can’t’, have edited.

I think that is correct - the licencing system identifying computers rather than users. (but we may all be wrong!)

Right, it’s just a bit annoying, because we are sometimes switching a couple of times on a day when we’re both at home.

Loading NotePerformer’s playback engine always takes a little, and I don’t want to always load all the instruments when I need only half of them, so I have so select them all manually.

Sorry. I don’t understand this. NP will only load the instruments it sees in your score.

If I choose my preferred playback engine (Iconica Sketch), I have to load the instruments from its library first.

Dorico remembers the settings for a score, so it will load whatever you have previously set.

But if you have a preference for certain instruments from specific libraries, create your own custom Playback Template (which can include Iconica sketch if you want) and use that.

If you find this burdensome, I suspect you are approaching it wrong.
