Hello everybody,
I am quite new to using Cubasis. I have previously mostly used GarageBand and I have not had the need to do a lot of “MIDI-routing”.
Now when jumping over to Cubasis I need other acoustic drum sounds than the stock ones. So I bought EG Pulse with the intention to use it as a sound module for already existing MIDI drum patterns.
I basically want to send the information from a MIDI file to a specific drum kit in EG Pulse and then eventually get it back into Cubasis as an audio file. I have looked for tutorials but I have not been able to find one describing in detail how to do this.
Any help would be appreciated.
Best regards
Anders
Hi,
I wrote this article for someone else a while back, I have changed it slightly to suite your EG Pulse.
Where I have mentioned “UM ONE”, this can be any midi interface or just a usb connection, in which case you would select choice in #3.
I sometimes use a Roland UM ONE midi interface to connect my external midi keyboard/sound module to my iPad iOS, in your case it’s the EG Pulse.
If you look at my photo, numbers 1,2 & 3, you can see I have selected the Midi track channel 1, turn the volume down for this channel in the mixer, DO NOT MUTE IT.
First select the “Routing” tab #1.
Then select the “No Midi Out” tab #2 (this will change after your choice in #3).
In the Midi Out drop down box select UM ONE #3 (Midi Interface)
The midi is now output to my midi sound module (your EG Pulse)
The audio out from this module is routed back to the iPad using an audio interface and into audio track 2 in Cubasis3, tap on Routing and change Mono Input to Stereo Input.
The red button should be showing on the left of the audio track (under the M) and this track must be selected when recording, at the moment this button is white.
Hit record, select Mixer to see recording level.
Hello fixitmania53,
Thank you for your reply.
I have already tried this. The problem is that EG Pulse plays the same instrument (the kickdrum) for all notes. I guess there must be some settings in EG Pulse that I am missing.
I was also hoping to do this without going via some external audio interface. As for now I can only select mono input and if I try to record on this track nothing is recorded.
BTW, you can also choose “No instrument” instead of turning down the volume on channel 1 in the mixer.

Ok, so this is a response to my own question and what solved my issue.
The problem that EG Pulse only played back the kickdrum sound was because all the MIDI notes were “out of range” so to speak. It seems like EG Pulse uses keys C3 to D#4 which is two octaves above what is commonly used in Cubasis.
So when I transpose the notes to within that range it all works.

Welcome to the Cubasis forum!
Using AU plug-ins with Cubasis should be quick and simple.
Please check out these tutorials, to learn how it’s done for AU instruments and AU effects plug-ins…
Hope that helps!
Stay safe
Lars
Hello Lars,
Thank you for your reply and the link to these great tutorials. It was actually after watching them a couple of times that I realized that the problem was that the MIDI mapping in EG Pulse was not aligned with General MIDI. So when I transposed the whole MIDI-file two octaves down it was fine.

Thanks for your updated message!
Glad to read that everything works now as expected with EG Pulse and Cubasis!
Enjoy being creative,
Lars
Thank you Lars,
Maybe this should be another thread, but while I have your attention I have encountered a problem that I do not what is the root cause. I am also using DigiStix2 as an AUv3 instrument for some acoustic drum sounds. Quite often when I listen to a project I am working on the sounds from DigiStix2 will not play back. At one occasion yesterday I also encountered that Cubasis froze in that it did not respond to me “pressing” the play button. Other editing seemed to work. Since the project had a track with a DigiStix2 instance I came to the conclusion that it must be a problem related to compatibility with DigiStix2. I have yet to contact 4Pockets about this.
Thank you for your support
Anders
I suggest to get in touch with 4Pockets regarding the topic. We’re at hand to exchange with them on a technical level, if required.
Hope that helps!
Best,
Lars
