How can I make playing technique change without entering notes high or low when using EWQLSO
You need an appropriate expression map. This series of tutorial videos explains the concepts behind playback in Dorico:
You may find existing expression maps and playback templates suitable for the libraries you’re using here:
After you finish that video, browse this thread. It has expression maps and setup directions.
Dear derAbgang,
Thanks for rerouting me - I read it all.
I don’t understand though
how come that I can make an Staccato expression map entry and the corresponding key switch in EWQLSO but I’m not able to write staccato as an playing technique in Dorico - how to activate this?
I also tried with staccato markings and obeserved The EWQLSO player during playback, no reaction/activation og KWS
There’s a basic idiom I dont grasp in expression mapping also after reading your very good article and
expression map EWQLSO all - TEMPLATE.dorico (2.6 MB)
response to mducharme and paulxoro
Yes, there is a lot going on in your expression map. I’ll add more later but first observations:
- You have Violin 1 as a section player but all the other strings are individual players. That doesn’t affect playback as you have them routed correctly, but will make a difference if you want to do divisi.
- In the 18 violin expression map, your note length conditions are completely overlapping: Legato >= short; Legato >=medium etc. Dorico will get pretty confused about that.
- Your mutual exclusions don’t seem to be working so playing techniques start piling up, e.g., mm. 15-17. You have legato overlapping spiccato. I believe many of the other problems are related to those overlaps.
- You mix playing techniques, e.g., you don’t need the word “legato”, you simply need those notes under a slur.
- Not related to expression maps, but for some reason, 2 duplicate projects open when I open that .dorico file.
- And NotePerformer also opens because you have that as the current Playback Template. When building something from scratch, I would always choose the Silence template.
I’ll have a bit more time later today to look further.
EDIT: I see also that you are using legato as a duration-less direction. This will treat all ensuing notes as legato until you cancel it with nat/ord. (see above, Legato + Spiccato).
I’m not sure what you are saying. Do you mean Shift+P “staccato” or selecting a note and using either your mouse or the keyboard short-cut?
Any any rate, I’m not going to overwhelm you so I suggest 2 important things that should clear up many of your issues:
- Clean up the conditions for Legato in your expression map. They must not overlap. If you must, and I do this sometimes, just create 5 entries for Legato:
== very short
==short
==medium
==long
==very long
… and assign the keyswitches appropriately - If you intend on using legato from the Shift+P pop-over, make sure you assign it with a duration. You can tell it has a duration by the handle on the right hand side:
This will ensure that the play(ing/back) technique will revert to Natural after the length of the passage.
Lastly, you don’t have a secondary dynamic setup so gradual dynamics will not work. All patches except short articulations react to expression (CC11) for gradual dynamics (note velocity is being main volume dynamic).
Good luck.
Dear derAbgang,
sincerely thanks for a very thorough response.
for clarification: is this
== very short - 32’
==short - sixteenths
==medium - eight notes
==long - quaver
==very long - half etc.
