Using MIDI keyboard for playback as well as note input

Hi. Sorry to be a pain with a question from a former Finale user.
My Korg midi Keyboard is recognised as an input device, but only as “USB cable”. But it works superbly well, saving so much time, rather than inputting individual notes.
But, no matter what I try, (Midi thru ON/OFF & etc) I cannot get any sound output from the Keyboard. I’m not going to bleat on about Finale, but bi-directional is fine there, proving the laptop, cable and Korg midi systems are healthy.
Can I have some advice from one of the Dorico gurus, please?
Best regards, Pete

If I understand you correctly, you want to play back music using the sounds on your keyboard, rather than using the sampled sounds etc. provided by Dorico? If so, then you need to add your keyboard as a MIDI output device in Play mode.

In Play mode, choose the VST and MIDI tab on the left-hand side, and expand the MIDI Instruments section. Click the + button, and choose the MIDI output that corresponds to your Korg keyboard. Be careful not to choose the same MIDI port that you have enabled for MIDI input on the Play page of Preferences, because that will create a MIDI feedback loop and Bad Things Will Happen.

Once you’ve added your keyboard as a MIDI instrument, on the Routing tab, you can select each instrument in turn and assign it to be played back via your keyboard. You may also need to adjust the Ex. map drop-down for each one, because the expression maps Dorico chose for its built-in sounds certainly won’t apply to your MIDI keyboard.

Hi, Daniel. Thank you for your interest.
In Play mode, I selected VST and MIDI and expanded the Midi Instruments section.
Nothing shows up here, other than MS Waveform and Garritan.
I cannot see “Korg”, “MIDI cable” nor indeed anything that even resembles an instrument name!
Any further ideas, please.
Incidentally, it does not matter whether Dorico or Korg voices are heard from the Korg - any flippin’ sound would make me happy.
Regards, Pete

Let’s start by getting Dorico’s own sounds to play back. Are you saying that you are unable to hear playback of any kind in Dorico at present?

Hi again, Daniel. Sorry for the delayed response, but I’ve been working a couple of night shifts.
In answer to your query, Yes and No _ Yes, I get playback from Dorico through my laptop & PC speakers, but NO, no sound whatsoever through the MIDI IN/OUT cable to the Korg. I repeat, input along this cable, mainly for note entry, is 100%.
I haven’t a lot of hair left at my age, but after trying everything I know, with no sound from the Korg, I’m pulling even more out! So, hopefully, your advicecould prevent my wife being married to a bald bloke!
Best regards, Pete

OK, so long as you’re getting playback through Dorico’s own sounds, then all is well.

So to recap, when you click the + button in the MIDI Instruments section in the VST and MIDI panel in Play mode, you see this little thing appear:

CleanShot 2024-09-24 at 16.20.34@2x

When you open the drop-down where it says 01 - —, do you see any devices listed there?

Yes - “Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth”

Right – so for whatever reason, there’s no MIDI output port on your computer that is connected to the MIDI input on your Korg device. I’m afraid I don’t know what you need to do to troubleshoot that. Dorico only “sees” the MIDI input and output devices that are provided to it by Windows itself, so you need to investigate the MIDI devices known by your system.

It’s been too many years since I used Windows myself that I have no recollection of how that’s done, so I’m afraid this is the point at which I have run out of concrete information that might help you.

Hi, Daniel
Just a quick “Thanks” for trying to help. I’ve done the best I can with what knowledge I have and what I’ve gleaned, but all I have achieved is to get “midi cable” in the box you indicated. But thern I come to a stop!
But I truly appreciate your efforts.
Best regards, Pete

You may need to find a MIDI driver made by Korg for your keyboard.
I don’t know what operating system you are on or what model keyboard you have, but there is a driver for many Korg USB MIDI devices for Windows found here:

Peter, your original message is a little bit confusing. For example you say bi-directional is fine with Finale and your MIDI keyboard - but MIDI only carries data in one direction. It would help pinpoint the issue if you could you describe in a little more detail your Finale setup (how are you getting audio playing back, are you using a workstation with sound banks or a plain MIDI keyboard and software sounds, etc).

Also, when you go to Edit-Device Setup in Dorico, is the same audio device listed as what you use with Finale?

Good morning. ebrooks

Thank you for your helpful interest.

On my Keyboard, a Korg, there are MIDI IN and MIDI OUT sockets. I have a MIDI to USB (or USB to MIDI) adaptor plugged in, 2 cables into the adaptor, 1 cable out to USB.

Entering notes into staves is no problem - note entry is by “midi cable”.
But, even though my laptop recognises the “midi cable”, no sound comes from my Korg.
I have tried everything suggested by various helpful people, but no sound comes out of the Korg on Playback. I can hear Playback through the laptop inbuilt speakers, through headphones socket, and also via Bluetooth, but nothing from the Korg.

If you need more information, please do not hesitate to contact me - I am getting quite frustrated with this problem, and would appreciate any and all help.

Best regards, Pete

Thank you for your advice. The Korg works well with this laptop on Finale, both on Note Entry and Playback, so I don’t really want to disturb anything there.
But, again, thanks for your advice.
Best regards, Pete

I used a two-step process with my Yamaha DX7. This may be similar to what you tried.

First I “activated” the MIDI cable option in the VST and MIDI tab.

Then (in the Track Inspector tab) I assigned the option (the cable name) to my Piano part.

When I start the Piano passage in Dorico, it plays back the notes on the DX7, but…

  1. The sound comes from the speakers attached to the DX7, not from the computer speakers that play back other, internal Dorico sounds.
  2. The sound is whatever I have assigned on the DX7 (Jazz Guitar) rather than a piano sound.

This seems as it should be.

Windows allows programs to take exclusive control over MIDI. If you only have one MIDI port configured and another program is using it, then Dorico won’t be able to. Not sure if that’s your situation or not, but if so you’ll need to create multiple MIDI ports (loopMIDI is one freeware program that can do that) then some sort of software MIDI router to route the signal to multiple ports simultaneously. I use Bome, but there are lots of options including MIDI-OX (free although ancient), Bidule, Camelot, etc.

In Dorico, you have two important MIDI locations to configure.

One is for the incoming MIDI signals, configurable in Preferences → Play. It seems from your posts that you can see your MIDI-In cable listed there, its box is checked and that’s why note entry is working fine.

The other one is for the outgoing MIDI signals. This one is in Play Mode, as both Daniel and Derrek explained. First, you will need to set up your MIDI cable as the device under the “MIDI Instruments”, and then assign each track in the “Track Inspector” to this cable on the specific channel.
