In Dorico, using VePro, I would like to be able to use both the Synchron Strings Pro and the Duality Strings Sordino for each of the corresponding string sections, ie, Vlns 1 would access both depending on if it is con sord or not.
I use VePro to host the libraries for Dorico to access.
What would it take in terms of adjusting the expression maps to make this happen?
I’ve tried switching midi channels via expression maps in the past - I think I found it unreliable. My method for this kind of thing would be to use Independent Voice Playback and simply put the muted strings into a different voice on a separate midi channel. This way, you can have separate expression maps for each library.
Thanks guys!
Hm, this is not straightforward…
As my purpose here is to simple get con sordino samples running I must either switch/buy Duality Strings or continue having some patches from Appassionata triggered for those.
I have Strings Pro and it would perfect if some plans where there to extend this library with sordino-patches. In fact, I am a little surprised that this is not at least announced as a future development, it being an essential part of any string library.
Anyway, thanks for good ideas.
With Duality Strings you have the official VSL maps for using both duality regular and sordino simultaneously just by putting a con sord. or muted playing technique in the score. There’s no official way of doing this if you have Duality Sordino and Synchron Strings Pro.
You have two unofficial solutions - one is to use independent voice playback and put all Sordino in voice 2 and load the Duality Sordino library for that channel, and hide/remove things as necessary to get the score to appear correct. The other is you could go into Synchron Player fashion a preset that would use the same keyswitches as the combined duality regular/sordino expression map is expecting, but with Synchron Strings Pro in its place.
I think it might just be easier to buy Duality regular too though.
I think it is probably unlikely we will see a sordino version of Strings Pro as most of that was recorded a long time ago now, but I have no special insight into their thought process.
Something you might consider also is the Sordina version 2 mute simulator plugin, which has the ability to simulate string and brass mutes, as well as simulating techniques like sul pont and sul tasto. I use this all the time for libraries where I need to have a different technique than they have available.
As mducharme said using independent voice playback is the easiest to do what you want. Mainly because the EMs are not identical for Duality and Strings Pro.
Alternatively you can use the merged (Con Sord. and Senza Sord.) preset which comes with Duality Strings and modify the A-1 key switch to activate the Strings Pro Preset (what they call the root slot) instead of the Duality strings regular. You can then switch between Duality CS (B-1) and Strings Pro (A-1). The problem is that the expression maps for these libraries are not identical. So that will create some work and you maybe have to simplify to avoid it gets too big to make both work with on EM.
