Using VSL Synchron Prime within Dorico, odd stutter when I stop playback

Just began working with Synchron Prime. Using it in Dorico 5.latest. It’s really nice, but I’m getting an unexpected stutter when I stop playback.

I’ve attached a brief clip of what it sounds like, (recorded the sound from the speakers on my phone, put a gain envelope on the recording to emphasize the stutter sound).

Using the VSL playback template for Dorico. I’ve got 64 Gig of Ram, Win 10 (latest) PC. Using Apollo TwinX Quad audio interface. I’ve tried using buffer settings of 512 as 1024.

Any thoughts?

I also use Synchron Prime but prefer the NotePerformer NPPE over VSL’s playback template. It might or might not resolve your current problem but you can try it out for free if you are interested.

I can’t say enough good things about NPPE. I used to use the Synchron library directly in Dorico. I recently tried NPPE for Synchron and the difference is striking. Balance issues were immediately obvious and it just sounds so much nicer.

NP in Dorico is good but NPPE is great!

Big thanks to Mike_999, and also liegh_d, for the additional clarification.

I’d previously done an evaluation of NotePerformer 4. The template is still installed. Managed to get that to work but I still hear the stutter, upon playback stopping, though it’s not as loud. I’ll reach out to VSL about this eventually, once I have a better sense of things.

If owning NotePerformer will help me get better results from bounced files, after exporting to my DAWs, (Studio One, and Luna), via midi, I might end up purchasing, but there’s still a ton about playback templates I don’t understand, and I’m not really sure what the equivalent of playback templates are when working with Dorico files in my DAWs. Slowly figuring things out.

In your case the sampled renditions are going to be the finished product and it won’t be performed by an actual ensemble, so the NotePerformer route would not be helpful for you in this case. You’re going to want to use the VSL playback templates as you are so that you can transfer the MIDI to your DAW and have everything sound the same.

The otherwise good advice given above is being given with the assumption that this is a piece that will be performed and so the mock-up doesn’t have to be polished, but neither of those is true here and you need the fine control that NotePerformer would take away from you.

The issue would probably be best raised on the VSL forums or by sending an email to VSL tech support, if you’re only experiencing it with the VSL instruments.

VSL support suggested the issue might be due to the ASIO driver I was using. When I switched from using Universal Audio’s (Thunderbolt) ASIO driver to Steinberg’s driver, in Dorico, the problem went away.

There’s a very brief continuation of sound when I stop playback, but it’s not at all annoying.

Follow up:

  • Enabling ASIO Guard, in Preferences, fixed the problem I was experiencing with ‘stutter after stop’, when using Universal Audio’s Thunderbolt ASIO drivers.
  • Enabling ASIO Guard also fixed a problem I was having when using Steinberg’s ASIO driver. I’d been experiencing crackling sounds upon playback.

Moral of the story… ASIO Guard is helpful!

Thanks, everyone!
