VEPro server project file for Iconica does not load instruments

I have installed Iconica Sections & Players on an external SSD. The Library Manager shows the instruments and the Dorico playback template loads them.

When I open the supplied server project file for VEPro, however (Iconica - Mac.vesp64), it loads the necessary instances and channels but does not load any instruments.

It makes no difference if in Dorico I load the playback template for VEPro.

I can load the instruments into VEPro manually, but getting the keyswitches to marry up with the expression maps would be a huge pain.* Can anyone tell me why the project file isn’t loading them?

I have VEPro 8.

*EDIT: Actually I can save the settings in the Dorico playback template as multi programs and load those in VEPro. But, within each VEPro instance (e.g. woodwinds), that gives me all the instruments in a single HALion instance, whereas the official project file appears to be set up with one HALion instance for each instrument. I assume there are good reasons for this.

Is your VEPro server running on the same machine as Dorico or on a separate computer?

Same machine.

Or is it? Within each VEPro instance (e.g. Woodwinds), the project file does create multiple “channels” (i.e. plug-in slots, not to be confused with MIDI channels), each of which has the name of a different instrument. Since I can’t get the file to load properly, I don’t know whether each “channel” is supposed to have a HALion instance on it.

But in John Barron’s video it is clear that all the instruments within each VEPro instance are packed into a single HALion instance on the first “channel”. In the case of the woodwinds, this “channel” is called “Winds - Piccolo”, but is loaded with all the other woodwinds too. Perhaps John set the project up with all the instruments on one “channel”, but also included multiple “channels” for the benefit of anyone who prefers that approach?

Anyway, if there are no disadvantages to having multiple instruments on one “channel”, it’s easy to re-create the server project from the settings in the Dorico-only playback template. But I’d rather not be reinventing the wheel. John’s plug-and-play approach was one of the things that attracted me about Iconica.

I am experince something similar. In Ve-pro the Halion plug-in is not loaded. Im able to manually load the Halion plug in in Ve-pro both Vst3 and AU. I did contact Vsl support, who answered: “Since you can load HALion manually, the problem is not in VE Pro!”. I have just bought Iconica opus at the generous sale, both because of the sound and the free Ve-pro/ Dorico template

I was privilidge to have a Zoom meeting with Ulf, we didn’t find the entire solution but it inspired me to investigate some more. It turns out doing the installation of Iconica Opus, the Halion instrument folder was not installed, which caused the warning from Ve-pro server. Anyway, the Halion player and instruments are still not loaded in the ve-pro template. Thinking about this template was made 5 years ago…several Halion and Ve-pro updates later could be the reason. Is it possible that the Dorico guru, who makes a lot of help full YT videos for Dorico and who made this template could have a look at it? Is it possible to get in contact with him?

The connection between Dorico and the Ve-pro serve templates connects well.

I thought of that, but according to the blog page the template was updated this month.

Maybe something went wrong in that update. Anyway, Im just a simple user :-), I do hope it will be fixed.

Where can I find the blog you mentioned? Is it on Dorico’s homepage?

Do you mean this page?

Thank you Ulf!

I just wrote a message on the blog. I can see there is an other user experience the same September 2025…
