Vertical spacing after hiding staves

I have an SATB plus piano score. For much of it, only one voice at a time is singing. I have hidden empty staves, but it leaves a large gap between (say) the Soprano and piano lines. I would rather not have to adjust manually, but I can’t figure out (presumably from Layout options) how to adjust it over the whole piece.

Hi @alicebdearden, it is always better to upload your Dorico Project, so we can see your situation and give precise advices. Thank you.

Okay, here you go.

Here’s an updated file for you. Far from finished, but should help.

In Engrave mode, remove all the page overrides (the red triangles on the right side)
In Engrave mode, staff spacing (left side) remove the overrides at measure 5
In Layout, Vertical Spacing, Vertical Justification I did 80% for the top one, de-selected the checkbox and made the 2nd percentage at 70%. Play around with the top number.
Consider changing the page margins to 13mm for music and page margins
Consider turning off staff labels unless you need them. (I used a text label for the first vocal part).
If you make the music frame bigger on the first page - I think there is room to do so - you could move the 3rd system onto that page using make into frame

Hi @alicebdearden, and here comes my version (didn’t see jet what @JAMES_GILBERT did).

Dorico file:
Nativity simplified-3 corrected score layouts.dorico (1.7 MB)

I made three different Full Score layouts:

  • Fulls Score
  • Fulls Score (Piano) [with vocal staves to 75%]
  • Fulls Score (Vocal) [with piano Grand Staff to 75%]

99% of the settings are global Layout Options (Page and Music frame Margins, Minimal Gaps, Vertical Justification Thresholds,…). A couple of System breaks, and a very little manual tweak (note spacing for a little lyrics collision in Full Score- Piano Bar 49, because of the forcing into one system). Then I made your desired changes to the Page Templates, so you don’t have Page Overrides (delete the header token).

Maybe there is something useful there for you

This is an extreme case, with many changes in staff numbers. So is not so easy…

You can use the Library Manager to compare this with your original version.

If you have questions, please ask
