Vertical spacing in player/instrument tab

Hello,

I have been reading Dorico Help and this forum but still cannot get Dorico to do what used to be a piece of cake in Finale. Having made the switch to Dorico 5 and now 6 I am forcing myself to solve any issue I run into in Dorico, after all Finale has been a learning curve as well.

I did find an image from @benwiggy on vertical spacing but that used a score example. I am working on one of the players/instuments and changing numbers does not change the layout on my screen.

This is an import from Finale which I have split into multiple flows, one for each section of carnival des animaux.

Attached are 2 images, one of the first page of the score and one of the first page of instrument/player 1. I am trying to accomplish the equivalent of Finale’s space systems evenly.

I suppose I start with ctrl/shift-L but what can/should I change to get the even spacing?

If there is a document which explains settings and their effect on the layout I am happy to try reading/understanding that.

Kind regards,

Henk Hofman

Hi @Henk_Hofman, and welcome to the Forum.

Please red and follow this general guidelines (especially Nr. 4):

Your score screenshot is not clear as where are the page boundaries. So please upload your Project, for us to see the real situation.

For parts it is suggested, as possible workflow, to deactivate Layout Options/Vertical Spacing/Collision Avoidance/Automatically resolve collisions between adjacent staves and systems (and possibly increase the inter system gaps.

Here a visual guide:

To study and better comprehend Layout, I suggest these two videos:

Hi Christian,

Thank you for your reply, I will watch the suggested videos.

I could not upload my 4,06 MB project file due to 4MB restriction hence the screen captures.
I have deleted 4 players which brought it down to 3,91 MB

Kind regards,

Henk

Part of the problem is that you overfilled the page, which does affect Dorico’s ability to space automatically.

The white space above your Headings seemed excessive, so I changed that from 10mm to 8mm, and to my eye the page spacing seems more even now.

Hi Christian (and Derrek),

Just to let you know that I have watched one of the suggested videos and have begun to apply suggestions from the video.

In vertical spacing disabling “avoid collisions” turned out as a quick way of even spacing but I had to manually adjust flow headers, tempo markings and probably others I have not yet noticed. So now I am diving into help etc to learn more about settings for these so that I do not have to disable “avoid collisions” / finetune Dorico rules to match my preferences and avoid the manual adjusting bits.

It takes time but then again, when I started using Finale 27 years ago there was a learning curve too.

Kind regards,

Henk.
