Vertical video - incorrect display in C13.0.50

(Still) won’t play vertical video (9x16 aspect ratio) in its correct orientation. Thumbnails won’t generate.

NOTE: - StudioOne v6 has no problem with this; thumbnails ok and correct orientation displayed in its video player (see screengrab in zip file attachments).

Example of MediaInfo detail for review, from one such ‘problem’ file (not the video itself; too big for a quick attachment here):-

MediaInfo_vertical video.zip (981 Bytes)

Screen grabs for comparisons (VLC Player, VidPlayVST plugin, StudioOne v6, Cubase13)

So, if you’re into making TikTok/Instagram content (phone vids/selfies), Cubase is not the app for having fun putting music or sound-design audio together for them, before uploading…

Although in truth, I guess it never was/has been.! The younger audience just doesn’t have a concept that Cubase is anything they should consider for their audio/video needs… but that’s a whole different (huge) debate…

Then again, StudioOne is good to go…

No change at C14.0.5

Same at C14.0.20

Applies to Nuendo too no doubt. They’d like improvements there as well…

Even a simple option to be able to rotate the display in the video player window, would be a start… I have the example video file (see screenshots in OP) to post somewhere if a dev wants to take a look…

Is this a full on ‘Feature Request’.? After 4 months, I can no longer add the tag to this topic…

Yay.! Seems this may now be addressed at C14.0.30 released today…

From the Release Notes:-

  • Portrait-oriented videos are now properly displayed when Aspect Ratio is set to “Internal.

Though, notice it seems similar to this entry too:-

  • Positioning of portrait-oriented videos using the “Aspect Ratio: Internal” setting is now correctly handled in the built-in Video Window.

Is the former referring specifically to viewing video on an external display perhaps.?

(Not updating until tomorrow, to check the latter myself)

Latest update on this with C14.0.30

Throughout this thread I’ve been testing with one specific video clip…

To recap, this one clip refuses to display (playback) in the correct orientation in C14.0.20 and having now checked, it also fails in C14.0.30

It loads and displays fine in StudioOne v6.6.4 and VLC player on the desktop and Windows Media Player (Win10 and on a separate Win11 machine). Note the detail from the MediaInfo txt file attached in my original post - it’s a normal landscape frame orientation 3840x2160 clip, but has a ‘Rotation’ setting of 270. Maybe its a clue.?

So, I’m unsure from the C14.0.30 release notes what exactly was addressed here wrt vertical video support, since I’ve tested other properly formatted vertical video which I downloaded from a video clip site (i.e. 1080x1920 or 2160x3840) and regardless of the ‘Aspect Ratio=Internal’ setting in Cubase’s video player, these display correctly in C14.0.20 anyway.! They are also fine in C14.0.30.
Two test files zipped up:-

[By the way, the ‘Cyclist_Palm’ 2160x3840 video clip here, gives badly stuttering playback in the Cubase video engine (C14.0.20 and C14.0.30) whereas it plays smooth as butter in StudioOne, VLC player, Media Player, on the same machine. Try it yourselves, let me know.! System specs in profile.]

So, maybe @m.chulek it is just this last piece of the puzzle that the video engine needs attending to - respecting support for ‘rotation’ parameter.? Otherwise, maybe I’ve been wrong all along, as it seems Cubase video player has been handling (properly formatted) vertical video ok since before C14.0.30
