I bought Nuendo primarily for audio editing in video.
So I imported a non-standard MP4 video ratio into Nuendo 12. I was able to edit the audio with no issue and was able to see the ratio playback flawlessly in Nuendo’s video player.
However, I was really surprised that upon exporting the final video, it would only export in 1080x1920px. Doing some research, I saw that the flagship of Steinberg apps cannot even export into non-HD ratios. One ratio export only? Never noticed it before, because I mainly did HD, but now with many clients wanting video shorts in smartphone format, this ratio is becoming a thing.
This really has put me off from using Nuendo for sound editing of videos going forward, because it introduces three extra steps into my video editing workflow.
1.) Edit / Cut video in Premiere or Davinci, then export
2.) Edit audio in Nuendo, then export audio
3.) Import Audio into Premiere
4.) Export video with audio.
Are there any plans to include custom video ratios for export in Nuendo in future releases? If so, when can we expect them?
If not, I guess I will have to drop Nuendo for editing sounds in videos and then simply import my VSTs into my video editing app and do my sound natively in the video app.
Since I also own Wavelab (which I use mainly for mastering), I will look into Wavelab video export as well, not sure if that app will allow me to export various video ratios.
You should use something like Shutter Encoder it has a function called Replace Audio in Video and does exactly that, the video is untouched only the new mix is added (to a new video file copy).
But when you do looped video shorts, the timing needs to be very accurate. It needs to loop without any crackling sounds at the end or beginning.
Also, if shutter encode can do it, why not Nuendo?
Philippe has done something very smart in Steinberg’s WaveLab. You can open the video on a video track in an audio montage and then just save the audio INTO THE VIDEO. It basically just swaps out the audio when you export and so the video ratio is not of any concern. You just need to make sure the export option “Range of Active video clip” is checked and voila, it’s done.
Maybe the Nuendo team should get in touch with PG and the Wavelab dev team and possibly work out a similar solution for Nuendo.
The current video exporting functionality in Nuendo is too limited and results in an inefficient workflow.
Im not sure if n13 supports the discussed ratio… So try before you buy.
On the topic of loops: they are not that difficult to make seamless. you have to create 3 joined duplicate versions with proper crossfades between. Then Export the middle loop and check for zero crossings at start and stop.
Take wav file and use something like shutter encoder to replace audio in video.
Presto
The ‘replace audio in video’ function in 13 is limited to mp4 in h264 and h265. Replace audio in video doesn’t function for ProRes format, for example. AFAIK it’s the same in Wavelab - it is limited to certain formats only.
Yes, video export from Nuendo is very limited. A few more options would be welcome and I’m sure would be useful to many users.
