Virtual instrument (controller connection) problem after track freezing (VST3 > NI Komplete Kontrol)

Win10 Pro, Cubase 12 Pro

Hey, here is the problem: if you freeze instrument track with Kontakt8 or Komplete Kontrol even once, after unfreezing KT8/KK no longer conntects automatically to S88MK3. Not only in the project you’re working on, but in all other projects, existing and new.

Also after this, even if you manually connect KT8/KK to S88MK3 (File>Contoller>S88MK3), when you select DAW button on S88MK3, connetcion is lost (buttons BROWSER and PLUGIN inactive).

In the same time, S88 MK3 connetion with Cubase (transport, etc,) is still intack, works with no problem.

Before freezing the track, both Kontakt8 and Komplete Kontrol connected smoothly to the NI S88MK3 controller.
Looks like after freezing the track Cubase deactivated something (in inner configuration? in NI VST? )
Any ideas?

For this moment I have both KT8/KK not working properly. So any suggestions most welcomed.

(yes, all versions both firmware & software are up to date)

Hi, I could replicate this issue here, it happens only when we have the option Unload Instruments When Frozen checked upon freezing a Komplete Kontrol track. I think this is not a bug, but rather a consequence of how NI implemented the auto-focus of the plugins. This mechanism involves setting the very first parameter of the QCs to a specific name. When we unload the instrument, this implementation gets out of order.

Try this:
With Cubase closed, open your file explorer and navigate to your Documents Folder \VST XMLs\Native Instruments\Komplete Kontrol.

There you’ll see another folder. Open it and there you’ll most probably see an xml file named Generic 8 Cells.xml. Rename it to something else (in fact I would completely delete it, but just to be on the safe side, rename it to keep it as a backup).

Re-open Cubase and add some Komplete Kontrol instances, so that you can check if auto-focus is again working.

I don’t know about Kontakt but probably it uses the same mechanism, so if the above works you can find a similar file in the Kontakt folder instead of Komplete Kontrol and delete it as well.

BINGO! This is it. Renamaing/deleting those files solves the problem.
Both Komplete Kontrol and Kontakt 8 work as needed.

Thank you very much @m.c for your time, attention and for sharing your knowledge

Just note that if you freeze again with the mentioned option checked, the issue will reappear

Sure thing, thanks.

I’ll have to check if freezing makes sense without unloading instrument option because the newest NI instruments are:

  • CPU hungry (most of them)
  • far from being optimized performance-wise

I did a small test the other day, freezing without unloading didn’t seem to have a bad impact. My Komplete Kontrol instances were properly synced with the controller.
