Vocal Harmony via MIDI Notes to a plug-in, or?

Wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to have a midi track doing real-time harmony processing while you are singing, the rest of the instrumental being on an audio track. Like is there a plug-in for vocal harmony processing (that I haven’t found)? Or is there a midi “instrument” that will process the harmony coming from your mic? (I can’t get Cubasis to send midi notes to my external vocal processor (TC Helicon VoiceLive Touch 2) because although my Samsung tablet sees the external via MIDI Connector, for some reason Cubasis just won’t see it or any other external MIDI device.) Thanks

Your microphone is not a MIDI controller, therefore it can’t send the analog audio notes being sung as MIDI note signals that any MIDI instrument could process. Second, even if you had an audio analog to digital MIDI converter, you’d still have an issue of lag time between realtime singing and the processed signal(s) with harmonies. As far as I know, our technology is not (quite) there yet, to do what you’re wanting to do “in realtime.”

Yes, I understand my mic is not a MIDI controller - lol. I’ve been using MIDI since it first came out. On my K2700 keyboard I sequence the MIDI track and it goes to my VoiceLive Touch 2 effects processor external device. And I sing in real-time with 4-part harmony - no latency problem at all. What I am asking is can my harmony notes MIDI track inside Cubasis send the MIDI harmony notes to a plug-in vocal effects processor using my real-time voice through a USB mic. Perhaps it doesn’t exist - but for whatever reason I am not able to get Cubasis to send the MIDI track to an external device. Thanks for the reply.

As for Cubasis “seeing” your Voice Live 2, an input on the VL2 must be configured to accept output from your Samsung tablet. Then in Cubasis you’d have a microphone track’s Routing assigned to a Samsung input port so the Samsung tablet could send the mic signal on to the VoiceLive 2.

I used to use a VL2 to record harmonies directly, too, without latency. I would expect the processing thru Cubasis to Samsung Tablet to the VL2 to add latency.

I understand better now. I don’t know of any vocal processors that accept anything but a microphone signal. It’s an interesting idea, for sure.

If you send this request on to TC Helicon, I’d be real interested in what they have to say.

When using the VLT2 (since there’s no existing vocal processing plug-in available?), I connect the mic to the VLT2 and don’t even need a USB mic. I just need to get the MIDI notes track in Cubasis to “see” the VLT2 - which doesn’t seem to work, even though my MIDI Connector app does see it. But in Cubasis, no matter the settings in MIDI In/Out, it never sees the VLT2 (been through all that with fixitmania on here already).

If I’m interpreting the VL2 manual correctly, your keyboard needs to be connected by MIDI ports on an audio interface AND USB cable disconnected from the VL2 or disabled via VL2’s Setup.

According to the VL2 manual, page 26:

“MIDI Hookup and Channel Selection
If you haven’t already, connect a MIDI cable between your keyboard’s MIDI out and VoiceLive 2’s MIDI IN. Play a note on your keyboard and check VoiceLive 2’s display to see if the MIDI indicator lights. If it doesn’t, set the MIDI transmit channel of your keyboard to 1 (VoiceLive 2’s default) or perform the following quick MIDI receive channel procedure.
Hold the PRESET up and SHORTCUT footswitches briefly to enter MIDI Setup. Press any note on your keyboard. This will automatically configure VoiceLive 2’s
MIDI receive channel to match your keyboard’s.Tap the SHORTCUT footswitch to exit. You should now see the word MIDI flash in the main display when you play your keyboard. You can also set MIDI channel manually in the MIDI tab of the SETUP menu.
MIDI IN and USB
To use the MIDI IN while you have a USB cable connected, press the SETUP button, locate the SYSTEM tab and turn the USB CONTROL setting to OFF.This will enable the MIDIIN. Alternatively, you may also remove the USB cable to access MIDI IN.”

So, I’d go keyboard MIDI Out to audio interface to Cubasis MIDI track, then Routing in MIDI track to audio interface MIDI Out cabled to VL2 MIDI In.

So Cubasis is configured to your audio interface and it’s the middle man between your keyboard and VL2. You still may have to manually configure MIDI channel used, but most devices default to All or channel 1.

Hope that helps.

Phew! I’m glad I can’t sing :face_with_spiral_eyes:

ROFLMAO!!!

Thanks, Fixitman! Hehe

Should we be glad, too?! LOL

Please don’t make me prove it…………we’ve had enough rain already

That good, huh?!

There is VoiceLive 2 (VL2) and there is VoiceLive Touch 2 (VLT2). I have both devices. Yes, you are correct in all that, but I am using the VLT2. I can use it fine when I connect my piano keyboard to it - no problem. The problem is that I wish to use Cubasis on my Samsung S7 FE tablet to connect to the VLT2. When I connect it via USB, the MIDI Connector app (it’s just an app that lets you see MIDI connections), it sees the VLT2 fine. But when I open Cubasis and try to connect the MIDI track to the VLT2, it simply doesn’t see it. (I also have an audio track that plays on my external speaker via Bluetooth).

I was just about to try and my wife ran over and :zipper_mouth_face::shushing_face:

It seems it’s going to be a process of elimination here. You say you can play your piano ok when connected to the VLT2 but the midi from Cubasis doesn’t operate VLT2, I’m not sure if I have already asked you if you have tried connecting your tablet out to a midi sound module, in my case I can connect iPad midi out using a Roland UM-1 midi interface connected to my old faithful Dr. Synth module and everything works perfect, what are your results when trying this procedure?

Yes, already tried - here’s a copy of what I wrote to you a few days ago, “I just tried connecting Cubasis (virtual USB port 1) as Output to my Kurzweil keyboard as Input device. The MIDI Connector app shows them connected, and Cubasis is set for ALL for Inputs and Outputs. I cannot get the Cubasis keyboard to trigger the external Kurzweil, nor could I get it to trigger the Korg I also connected. So while the MIDI Connector app SEES the connections, it seems to me that Cubasis is NOT connecting. And in the Cubasis Setup MIDI I tried all those various I/O options. I’m so frustrated!”

I can quite believe it!
Have you tried playing the Cubasis keyboard whilst it is connected to your
Kurzweil keyboard -and is there a Midi Thru tab on your midi connect app….is it enabled? I’m just trying to establish if any midi at all can exit your tablet

Yes, when connected I was touch-playing the Cubasis piano keyboard, but no signal to the Kurzweil. However, when I look at the MIDI Connector app and press “Test”, the test is succesful, says it sent MIDI note On, then Off, etc. Also, if you recall, when you click the Cubasis MIDI track Routing, All MIDI Ports (In and Out), never does it show my Kurzweil or my VLT2, only shows All and None. Have to run do a concert now - more later. Thanks for your interest. I keep wondering if there is a setting in Cubasis I don’t have correct, but I’ve done it every which way, I think…
